The Florida StandardsWhat About the New Assessments?

• LAFS and MAFS will be assessed with the new Florida Standards Assessments (FSA)

• Spring 2015 administration of elementary school assessments will include:– English Language Arts (ELA): Grades 3-5*– ELA Writing Component: Grades 4-5* – Mathematics: Grades 3- 5*

*4th grade will have Computer-Based Testing for ELA and Math. Writing will be paper based.

Information on ELA Writing Test (Opinion)• Students will have 3 articles to read about the assigned

topic.– Examples include:

• Should your city adopt a bike sharing program.• Should your school invest in water bottles or a water

purification system.– One article will be neutral and the other 2 will be for and

against each topic.– Students must read the 3 articles, then write their own

opinion on which would be better, citing information from the 3 source articles.

Information on ELA Writing Test (Informative)• Students will have 3 articles to read about the assigned

topic.– Examples include:

• Write an informative essay in which you explain how technology has helped explorers overcome challenges related to deep-sea exploration.

– All 3 articles will give a different piece of information about the topic.

– Students must read the 3 articles, then write their own essay combining all 3 articles and citing information from the 3 source articles.

The Florida StandardsHow May I Help My Child?

• Read different types of books and informational text with your child

• Ask your child to find answers to questions in the text of books, newspaper articles, manuals, etc.

• Encourage your child to form and defend an opinion by supporting it with facts, details and reasons from text

• Discuss mathematics ideas with your child have them explain these to you using pictures, graphs, etc.
