Yogesh and Suchna Shahmet through common friendsand after courting for some-time, took the plunge. Thiswas when Yogi (as he fondlycalled) was handling his fam-ily business and Suchna was

a cabin attendant with an in-ternational airline. “I was based in Mumbai and Suchnawas in Singapore. Apart fromour love for each other, onemore thing that we had incommon was our love fortravelling. We got married in2001 and founded the Back-packer Co, which is an ex-tension of our passion fortravelling. ‘Backpackers’ are

Even before we st arted this busi-ness, we always had friendswho would approach us todesign and plan their holi-days for them. So wethought, why not make itour business? And today, weare proud owners of thiscompany,” Yogesh says.

Ask him about the risk

they took by quitting theirrespective careers and start-ing their own business, hegives a pat reply, “It was thetwo of us; yes, there is a riskin a new venture and thattoo as niche as backpackertravel, but we had each otherfor support and confidenceand we just went ahead withit and there was no looking back.”

“It is great to be workingwith my wife as my businesspartner; I do not have the is-

sue of trust unlike when

you’re working with anotherpartner. I am the creativeperson in the team of us twoand Suchna is the morepractical one as she handlesall the administrative and fi-nancial work. So basicallyshe wears the pants in the business. The cardinal rulethat was set down beforestarting the business wasthat there will be no inter-mingling of roles; the persondoesn’t interfere or try tooverpower the other with

suggestions and the one

most important rule isthat ‘never take workhome’,” he says.

He adds, “We give eachother enough space too.We have our individualnight-outs where shehangs out with her girl-friends and me with myguy buddies. Also, one ofus is travelling for achunk of the month. Soall in all, we do not havean overdose of each oth-er too.”

working with a designer. As destiny would have it,they met through commonfriends in 1999 and at thattime, Shane also neededsomeone to paint his first

collection. So they teamedup and as they say rest ishistory. They got married in2001 and were still work-ing with separate entities. After they had their babydaughter, that’s when theyrealised they should go into business together ratherthan work for someoneelse; so in 2004, the Pea-cock label was launched.

The designer duo, Shaneand Falguni Peacock, is anapt example of coupleswho have turned entrepre-neurs, post marriage. Be-fore their marriage, bothwere working profession-als who never thought thatthey would start their busi-ness together one day.Shane was working as anexporter and Falguni was

“It was our passion for

our work and love for eachother that we decided tostart the label together. Itmade more sense as wewere working in the samefield but for different peo-ple. However, it is not assimple as starting your business with your partner.Maybe, the implicationsare not as much, but ittakes as much hard workas with anyone else. Youhave to shoulder yourshare of the responsibility

PARTNERS INGROWTH

PARTNERS INSUCCESS

For a growing number of couples, running a business together offers the best of both worlds: pursu-ing a professional dream with someone you love and respect, while also getting a chance to spendmore time with them. Imagine your life partner being your business partner as well. However,

working with your spouse takes more than it meets the eye. There are many couples who say this is the best thing that has happened to them and their marriage. Nowadays, you can see a rise in the number ofcouples who have given the corporate jobs a miss and instead, prefer to start something of their own, post marriage. However, running a business with your spouse is not always hunky dory. A few couplesshare their success stories.

and can’t take yourpartner/spouse forgranted,” she men-tions.

It does take a littleworking on, as you

have to understandthat even after thework day is over, yougo back to that sameperson. But for Shaneand me, that was nota problem. “It waslike an unsaid rulethat work argumentsand problems will not be taken home andwe are matureenough to handle theother petty problems. because we keep thereal and true fact inmind and that is thatwe love each othertoo much to be both-ered by such thingsand also our workshould never suffer because of our per-sonal differences.

I personally feelthat it is more volatileworking with yourspouse as a businesspartner than a friendor business associate. There has to be a cer-tain level of maturityin both the partnersto handle the implica-tions.”Ask her aboutthe space issue andshe replies, “Well, yousee, it is the way you

perceive it. When weare at work, we areworking professionalsand nothing more sowe get so involved inthat role that it is not

possible to think I amspending too muchtime with my hus- band or the otherway round and attimes, when I do sitand think about it, Ifeel happy and luckythat I can actuallyspend a major chunkof my time with theperson I love themost. So isn’t that anadded advantage,”asks Falguni. Con-cluding the interview,Falguni says, “Neitherof us can keep tellingthe other person dur-ing an argument thatyou don’t know theamount of work Ihave or the workpressure as it is equal

for both of us. Also, this has given us aneasy way to work onour relationship andmake it strong.”

So, for the youngworking professionalcouple of India Inc,transfer your commit-ment and love foreach other into mon-ey making businessmodels and be suc-cessful copreneurs.
