PLAN R.T. P. Gidding’s famous abbreviated Course of Study

in Public School Music reads as follows: “Show

them how and then see that they do it.” This leaves

little more to say about a plan or method of teaching

a book in which the notation is so graphically represented that

the method of teaching it is obvious.

Of course there must be some “rote reading” at the beginning

but it is not necessary to use all of the songs in the book for

this purpose. Two songs in each key taught by ear and then

by eye will “show them how”. After that the children will

begin to sing by note, haltingly at first, but with cumulative

power, if they are not interrupted by too much teaching.
