Survival After the Civil War Downtown/Penn Quarter/Chinatown

Clara Barton Missing Soldiers Office Museum 437 7th Street NW, Washington, DC 20004

When soldiers came marching home, there was no support system in place to care for their physical or psychological wounds. The Pension Office provided varying amounts of financial support to each soldier, and expected women of the house to handle everything else. When husbands died, some women were told they would not receive their widow's pension as they had proven themselves too independent to
need financial assistance. Ashley Bowen-Murphy, a doctoral student in American Studies and Public Humanities at Brown University, will talk
about stories from the home front and how gender roles and the role of government were changing in the wake of the Civil War.
