The Communication Concepts Model:

A Look into the Cellular Phone Voice Call

By: Brianna Person

Encoding

Defined:Recode or modify information into a desired format or pattern for a specific method of transmission or storage

Sub Concept:• Converting

Acoustical to Electrical Energy: To change acoustical waveforms (noise) into an electrical signal.

Transmitting

Defined:To convey information from one location to another

Sub Concept:• Duplexing: Process is

which both ends of the communication can send and receive signals at the same time.– Full-Duplex: Both

directions at the same time.

• Switching: Process that allows for the interconnection of more than two communication devices.

• Cell phones operate on a duplex system, which uses two frequencies – one for talking or sending, and one for listening or receiving

Receiving

Defined:The process of capturing a signal and then relaying it to the decoding device

Sub Concept:• Collecting: The

capturing an electromagnetic wave that has been propagated by a transmitting antenna.

• Connecting: The physical channels that move the signal to the decoding process.

• When you dial a particular number, the base station will automatically identify that number and assign an encrypted code on its transmission

• Cell phones also operate within cells and they can switch cells as they move around

Storing

Defined:Processes are concerned with holding and retaining data for use at some later time

Sub Concept:• Memory: The

processes that are used to acquire, store, retain and later retrieve information.– i.e. SIM Card

• They are a quick and easy solution to prevent borders, carriers or locked-down phones from slowing you down.

• SIM cards keep all of the information that is needed right on your phone.

Retrieving

Defined:Recalling information from a stored condition

Sub Concept:• Indexing: The

process of coding an item for retrieval purposes.

• Electronic Serial Number is issued to each phone for the life of that cell phone

• The ESN is used so that every time you call someone, a central system identifies you as the caller

Decoding

Defined:Presenting information in such a way that the user can benefit from it

Sub Concept:• Converting

Electrical to Acoustical Energy: To covert the electrical signal back into a form that people can understand

• Don't think of a cell phone as a telephone, think of it as a radio

• Calls can be intercepted!
