The real mportance of ths oftanthologzed game dd not become apparent untl two years later durng the frst days of WorldWar I when Edward was nterned for three months n England as anenemy alen. e ganed early release and permsson to leave for theUnted States thanks to the nterventon of a hgh Brtsh offcalwho had wtnessed Lasker's vctory Fortune favors the fortunateas someone ought to have sad by now
And so on October 21 1914 Edward saled for New York andarrved presumably, near the end of the month. For the mag
nfcent weekly rental of $2.50" he wrote n hs memors ChessSecrets I Leaed om the Masters , I found a room on 59thStreet not far from the Manhattan Chess Cubs quarters at Caegeall On Seventh Avenue, wthn a block from the club a restaurantserved excellent meals for 35 cents and I found a chess pupl at theclub who pad me ten dollars for chess lessons"
Unfortunatey Edward could not also fnd a job n New York eembarked on a smul tour to make money In Chcago he met Julus
Rosenwald, the head of Sears
Roebuck who hred hm as a safetyengneer e remaned wth the company from 1915 to 1919 Whereupon Edward was hred away by Ernest Gundlach presdentof the Chcago Chess Cub bombastc pano player (When hetcked the vores they aways stayed put" Edward used to say)

My partcular job Edward once wrote was to mprove themachne wherever mprovement was needed. I spent many monthson dary farms n Mchgan Mnnesota and Iowa whch acquanted
me ntmately wth Amercan farm lfe I had to get up at 4:30 everyday to get my expermental mlkng machne ready for the mornngmlkng. Breafast was served at sx and after that I had nothng todo untl the evenng mlkng a maddenng prospect whch I gradually learned to evade by helpng the farmer take n the hay
Edward Laskersuave and debonar man about Manhattanrakng hay and perhaps adornng hs mouth wth a sprg of strawDffcult to beleve even though he used to swear to these adventures
n 1921 Edward deserted moocows n favor of developng anelectrc breast pump to secure mother's mlk for premature nfantstoo weak to nurse. I made fve tmes as much money as earlerEdward once told me but for the next decade or so I had to putup wth frends callng me a chest player.'
By now Edward was n the grp of what he labelled the energyof successthat awensprng vtalty whch drves a man who suddenly realzes that contrary to all of hs expectatons he s destnedto become flthy rch. I t s a wonderful joyous energy that buldson tself and Edward soon teamed up wth a Dr. de avlland thefather of Olva to procure patents for some of hs dscoveres. Oneof these a lqud slver polsh that requred no rubbng became annstant success. From 1925 to about 1950 Edward ran hs ownelectro-medcal manufacturng and desgn company becomng thefrst man to demonstrate drect-wrtng electrocardography whchs to say the squly lnes one sees on an electrocardogram.
Lest the reader magne that Edward lved one of those envablecharmed lves celebrated by fm bographer Mchael Korda n hsbook of the same ttle let me assure you that he dd not. s frstmarrage to Cecle eller n March 1920, ended tragcally nNovember when she pershed at the tal end of the awful nfluenzaepdemc of 19191920. s second marrage n 92 to erthaFuerth was chldless and the two dvorced n 193 e dd notmarry agan and although he enjoyed a long frendshp wth manytme US. women's champon May Karff he would eventually de

chess standng vs-a-vs a famous dstant relatve Emanuel Lasker.Yet Edward won the U.S. Open fve tmes, and n 1923, he narrowlylost a match to Frank Marshall for the U.S Champonshp AlthoughEdward contnued hs normal work routne durng that match hewon the frst two games and was cleary outplayng hs famous opponent when Lady Luck struck hm a hard blow followng the
adjournment of game seven Leadng 3%2%, Edward was ht by anattack of kdney stones and rushed unconscous to Walter Reeseosptal n Chcago.
Need I say more? Anyone who has experenced the pan ofkdney stones knows what happened next. Edward lost the adjournment and eventually the match 8%9%.
In 1924 Edward played n the famous New York Internatonal, whch was won by Emanue Lasker ahead of Jose Capablanca,
Alexander lekhne Efm Bogolyubov and several other greatmasters. Edward dd well n ths fast company by scorng 6%13to nsh th n an 11-player feld. In sx games aganst the terrbletro of Lasker Capa and ekhne he scored four draws and obtaned at least three won postons.
Note the phrase three won postons" because Edward faled town any of them as well as several other won postons." Followngthe frst half of the New York event Alekhne correctly dagnosed
Edwards bggest problem as beng unable to put the fnshngtouches on tough games Wrote Edward n hs memors Alekhne. sad that I would probably make smlar mstakes n the secondhalf of the tournament. e argued that masters who freuentlyblundered n wnnng postons very lkely dd not have the physca consttuton needed to make a successful tournament player"
Successful?" Thats a relatve term and most of us would consder fve U.S. Open ttles to be plenty successful. Yet Alekhne hada pont. Edward possessed a fne feel for the openng and early mddlegame buldng up strong postons and pullng off numerous elegant combnatons aganst strong grandmasters. An Embarrassment of Anaysis
On a wntry day n 1932, after I had spent most of the afternoonplayng at the Marshall Chess Club, Edward asked me to jon hmfor dnner I accepted at once Durng the Great Depresson anyonewth a hghI.Q stomach nstantly devoured free eats and after ashort walk we were seated at hs favorte waterng hole n the WestVllage Lee Chumleys, just a block off Seventh Avenue at BarrowStreet In the words of one advertsement of the tme, Chumleyswas Where Chessplayers Fnd a Frendly Clublke Atmosphere"Indeed the food and the conversaton were delcous and we laterrattled off a few skttles games. What a wonderful evenngand sounlke one that followed about fve years later.
t was February 193 Nna and I had been marred for all of sxweeks and we were lvng on Chrstopher Street n Greenwch Vllage. After dnner went out as usual to buy the next day's newspapers and bumped nto Edward on hs way to Chumleys. Lke anyyoung marred buck who had yet to be tamed, I taed along. The

two of us, plus ermann elms proceeded to spend severa engrossng hours analyzng a varaton of the Tarrasch Defense that had used aganst Sammy Reshevsky n the 1936 U.S. Champonshp.
When next looked up t was nto the eyes of a planclothesmanwhom my wfe sent lookng for me. Nna called the polce when
faled to return by mdnght suestng to them three places where mght have stopped off What an embarrassment of analyss: hadoverlooked the man varaton
To my credt was never agan so nconsderate As for Edward,he expaned everythng so beautfully to Nna that thereafter hebecame her favorte dnner guest. Of course he never faled to brngfowers or chocolates whch endeared hm even more.
All of whch explans at east n part how Edward came to
spend a week wth us nearly 40 years later n December 195. ewas n the process of celebratng hs 90th brthday and vsted us nForda We decded to host what turned out to be a lovely party.Among those who attended were Dr. Juan Gonzalez a strong Cubanmaster who once won the U.S. Speed Champonshp Florda masterEd Celoro and the never-to-be-forgotten Anthony Santasere Ofcourse we chess payers soon organzed a speed tournament, and a
a concesson to Edward's age we gave hm % mnutes to our fvee dd fne wnnng a brllant game aganst Dr. Gonzalez thereby
avengng a defeat some 28 years earler n the 194 avananternatonal
Durng the party Bobby Fscher telephoned. The story behndths call s related at length n Chapter X Lets just say that Edwardand became nvolved n an effort to lure hstory's greatest payerback to competton. We even helped to arrange a meetng betweenBobby and Vktor Korchno. Nothng came of t.
Sad a saddened Lasker about my efforts, No one can brng
Bobby back. ts hgh tme you resgned. Edward was wrong.FscherSpassky proved that one person coud brng Bobby back.
Bobby hmself.
Chess Labor Organizer
Edward Lasker loved chess and ts masters as only a man of chesscan. e was sympathetc to the strues and prvatons of professonals and decded to help. n 946 Edward became a knd of
chess labor organzer and set up what was so far as know the frstorganzaton n ths country for chess professonals the Assocatonof Aercan Chess Masters. The am was to safeguard the rghts ofmasters and to set mnmum performance fees.

Sad to say the organzaton was born at a tme when manymasters were underbddng one another n order to stay alve. Otherplayers such as Reuben Fne and I were leavng the game altogetherbecause t presented a fnancal dead end Al you needed to do wasto observe the shockng fate of my frend, orowtz, who spentmonths every year barnstormng the country and gvng smuls for a
buck a board. Edward's organzaton ded a speedy death.
Edward's chess play, on the other hand, remaned strong wellnto the 1940s In the 1942 Marshall Chess Club Champonshp, heplayed a fnal serous game aganst hs old foe, Frank Marshall Thstme around he followed up on hs accustomed openng and earlymddlegame acuty to wn one of the fnest and least known Amercan games of the 940s

Blssfully unaware of the bade balanced above our ndvdualfates, we young nnocents were playng chess n a tournament todetermne the best hgh school team n New York Cty It was thenand there that I frst saw a tall, pencl thn baldng genteman wthwatery blue eyes. e wore a bay sut and bow te and stompedfrom table to table n oldfashoned laceup boots collectngscoresheets.
I had just lad eyes on ermann elms the leadng chessjournalst n the Unted States But to a young person, he looked sood and fral that when he leaned over my table to ask for thescoresheet I feared he mght topple over
ermann was on the scene because t was the fnal round of thetournament, and gven hs nterest n young players he wanted togather matera for hs weely columns n the New York Times androoklyn Daily Eagle. For the atter newspaper he wrote on chessfrom 1893 untl t folded n 1955
Born n 180, ermann was by 1929 the de facto Dean ofAmercan Chess though t was not unt 1943 that George Sturgsthe frst presdent of the US Chess Federaton formally bestowedthe ttle on hm The Dean s of course, an honorary member of allAmercan chess clubs, and never was an honor more rchly deservedthan n ermann's case.

Three-tme .S. Chess Chamion
The authors of this book are Grandmaster Arnold Denker S.chess chamion from 1944 to 1946 and founder of the ArnoldDenker Tournament of High School Chamons and Larry Parr
editor of Chess Le from 984 to 988 and Glasnost News &Review from 1988 to 1991. Mr. Parr who has received numerousawards for his chess wrting from the Chess Journalists of Americacurrently works as a Russan analyst. This book which is about themany memorable chess men whom Grandmaster Denker hasknown is a fully equal collaboration between the two authors. It isalso one of the finest chess memors of its kind.
After defecting from the Sovet nion in 1979 and arriving sometime later in the nited States I came to know GM Denker. And Iwant to assure readers of this book that the real-life Denker is thesame man who so lovingly records in these ages the fobles of hisDamon Runyonlike chess friends and himself. It seems as if Arnie isalways on the cutting edge of lfe living every minute to the fullest. No one seems to enjoy sitting at outdoor Parisian cafes or at LeeChumley's in New York more than he. No one relishes fne foodgood drnk and memorable chess conversation more than my goodfriend. His has been a charmed life which he relates in this movingremembrance of eole ast.
I am also a close friend of co-author Larry Parr whose rose Ihave long admired. The Bobby Fischer I Knew and Other Stories isabove all else a beautifully written book which s alternately sadand hay serous and wtty insightful and self-effacing. Larry cantake credit for transforming a life well-lived into a life well-written
As a chess warrior GM Denker has been called the NoblestRoman of Them All. hen he wins as in the following game against
