As we are fast approaching the commemorative cente-nary date of Britain’s entry into the First World War, the Wrekin News will be cover-ing events and local stories leading up this historic land-mark.Local author Chris Owen, is writing a book about the local areas of Wellington, Ironbridge and Bridgnorth and the effects of the war on their population. In particular he is cover-
suffered by these communi-ties in the war which has impacted on local families, and indeed nationwide, even up to this present day.Chris Owen says: “I chal-lenge Wrekin News readers to research their own family histories. Somewhere you will discover: Grandfathers, Uncles, Aunts even Cousins who either lost their lives, went missing or maybe even survived this catastrophe as

T HOMAS CHIDLEY Osborne died in France in the Great War. He died in Jan-uary 1915 three weeks after he had joined up and gone to war.He was 35 years old and volunteered like so many young men back then. As a result of his death three older brothers joined up, one of which was my grand-father, William Osborne and two years later my father, Leonard Osborne, joined up at the tender age of 17!I never knew my Great Uncle Thomas as I was born 20 years after his death. My father never spoke of him and none of us knew anything about him but my father, who was born in East-bourne, was left in Birming-ham with his Grandmother
when he was two years old.The rest of the family, William and Laura Osborne with Louis the baby, settled in Wellington and had two more children, Edna and Laura. My father stayed with his grandmother and her family until he was old enough to join up and then returned to live with his family in 1919, at Wellington.
Thomas was only six months old when his father, leaving four sons, died aged
29 years old. His mother married again and Thomas lived with her until his death. For fifteen years he shared his life with his nephew (my father) so my father must have loved his uncle very much.Thomas did not share any time with his uncle in Wel-lington, neither did my father as Birmingham was their home and there were many step brothers and sisters to share their lives with.Thomas left a great gap in the family when he died. His mother had his medal and his Uncle Arthur had it and left it to his grandson to keep in his care.
I have only found out about my great uncle Thom-as through wanting to know about my family tree. I feel I ‘know’ him now and I think about him a lot. Because my father knew him, probably more as a big brother than an uncle, he is a part of me.I am nearly 80 and the

of Joe Gough’s coal lor-ries, packed with bell tents,
cooking gear etc, and twen-ty-odd scouts perched on
the top. No Elf ‘n’ Safety in
From then on we seemed
to spend more time in that
old hut than we spent at
home – and many’s the mo-mentous events that took
I tossed my first pancake
there, but never sampled it
because it stuck to the great
roof-tree and didn’t drop off
for three days. We had one
old cupboard to hold stores
etc.We tended to forget what
was in there until it had
‘gorn orf’ and had to be
consigned to the flames –
except for a stone jar con-taining homemade plum
jam that someone’s mum
has sent up (this was war-time and rationing). That
jam stayed there for at least
a year, if not longer, fer-menting cheerfully, until it
became a joy to eat. We
called it ‘hiccup jam’.In later years when we
reached what might have
been the age of common
sense, the hut became the
venue for even crazier she-nanigins.
Weekends were spent
there, night-hikes seemed
to end there, lasting friend-
ships were made there –
but perhaps the highlight of
all this ‘huttage’ was New
Year’s Eve.Those of us who were
able to set off early to hike
up to camp (or as we got
older, to go by car or mo-torbike) - not for us a bag
of sandwiches; we had the
necessary grub for a full
roast. Even a spit-roast if
we could get the iron rod
jammed firm enough across
the fireplace. As night fell, the food was
enjoyed, songs were sung,
a brew was enjoyed, then
it was off down the lanes
to the pub at Leighton, the
name of which escapes
me (was it the Kinnersley
Arms?). After a game or two
of ‘bar billiards (ninepins)
we ambled back to the hut,
well stocked with cider flag-ons or whatever was pre-
ferred, and the silent lanes
were silent no longer as we
gave voice to some of the
old scout campfire songs
(I wonder if they are still
sung?).Back at the hut, throats
were wetted, the singing
probably became more rau-cous – but at eleven-fifteen it
was once again on with the
anoraks and off up to the
Wrekin summit to see in the
New Year. The shortest way
from camp was by no means
the quickest – straight up
the steep side following a
wire fence – known as going
‘up the wire’.Once at the top, as mid-
night approached, we got
ready – as many fireworks
as we could save from
bonfire night. Then it was
midnight and the Wrekin lit
up. If we did it now, we’d
have ‘Search and Rescue’
helicopters hovering. One year, two of our
number drove over to Stret-ton and climbed Caradoc
so we could send signal
rockets to each other. Even-tually, back down to camp,
a hot brew of cocoa and ‘hit
the hay’. We did not wake
up early on New Year’s Day!I think that’s more than
enough rabitting on my
part. I do seem to have
gone on a bit and that’s
only a small part of what the
old hut did for us!Ed. Thanks Mike, I’m in
regular contact with Nigel
Corbett who was one of the
team to refurbish the old
scout hut. It does sound
wonderful and it is great to
share your memories, so
many people appreciate it.

Wrekin news is Telford’s most established monthly magazine. it’s magazine format allows it to focus not only on the reader’s letters and nostalgia that it has become famous for but also to look forward to local events both in shropshire and a wider base. it is circulated through key locations such as major supermarkets and on a wider base through over 100 smaller outlets.
it is the most popular and widely circulated monthly title and remains the first choice of readers throughout Telford.
The new magazine format has allowed wrekin news to move with the times and cater for all levels of readership with its modern and lively format.
Marina leads the teamMarina Higgins is the sales Manager at wrekin news. Marina lives in Telford and has varied experiences having worked as traffic co-ordinator for Beacon radio and run charity events for local motorcycle events. she brings a wide knowledge of sales to the job.
Marina said: “Wrekin News is an exciting challenge for me. Working in Wellington, I can get round a lot of my customers by foot and can also schedule customers from a wider base very easily. I like to think that I understand the needs of my clients and I will always try to advise them about design, positioning and all things related to a successful advertising campaign.”
