Dear Parish Family, Every Sunday after the homily has been preached by either the priest or deacon we stand and pray the Nicene Creed (I believe in One God…). Toward the end of the creed we say that we believe in the Communion of Saints. This has a twofold meaning. The first meaning is that we believe in the communion of the Church in the holy things which are the seven Sacraments of the Church, and the second meaning is that we believe that we are in communion with the saints-the holy men and women-of the Church. Here at our parish our patron saint is Saint Bartholomew. He was one of the twelve apostles chosen by our Lord to go forth and preach the Gospel. But Bartholomew is most likely his last name. The word “bar” which means “son of” in Hebrew was used as a sign of a last name. In English we put the word “son” in the name as in, Johnson (son of John) or Williamson (son of William). His name means Son of Ptolemy. Our patron saint’s first name was Nathaniel which in Hebrew means “given by God.” He appears in the first chapter of St. John’s Gospel where Jesus says of him: "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!” (John 1: 47) St. Philip introduces Nathaniel to Jesus. In the list of the Apostles in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke he is called by his last name Bartholomew…like sometimes my friends will affectionately just call me Martin. St. Bartholomew was martyred in present day Armenia which is between Turkey and Iran. He was crucified and then before he died was skinned alive. This is why he is always shown holding a very large knife. He died in order to win souls for Jesus Christ. The feast day of our saint is August 24 which will be a Monday this year which is why as a parish we will celebrate his feast on Sunday the 23rd. Please stay tuned for more details about our celebration on St. Bartholomew’s Day. God Bless, Msgr. Martin
