Technology for Students with Special Needs

• Quick ways to integrate technology to meet diverse, specific needs in the K-12 classroom

Romans 12:7 “If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well.” (NLT)

Students are unique and come to the classroom with various gifts and abilities; teaching well sometimes requires adaptations that help all students reach academic goals. The integration of assistive technology can help meet those goals!

• Universal access options make computers easier to see, hear, and use based on special needs.

• Screen reader allows for text to be audibly read to student.

• Sticky keys allows for a key to be held until a second option is pressed.

• Visual and sound notifications can be triggered to show errors or pop-ups.

Contrast variation can allow for added focus or color differentiation (ex. for added focus = use colors red and yellow for higher visual stimulation)

Speech to Text Technology

• Students use a headset to speak into the mic; voice in automatically transferred to type in a word document as the computer recognizes the cadence and nuances of speech tones.

• The technology will adjust and become more accustomed to the speaker the more that it is used. Dragon Naturally Speaking Voice Recognition
