3. PRODUCT DESIGN
a. Product Description. This specification describes the materials and components for sword knots worn by the ARMY, RN, RM. & RAF.

• General to all leathers:
• Terms used are defined in BS 2780
• All leather is to free from flaws and other defects.
• Thickness of leather is measured in accordance with BS 3144 Method 3.
• Mixed shades of leather within the individual sword knot is strictly not acceptable.

4.1 Leather (continued)

4.3 Metallised Polyester
• The gold/silver thread is to consist of a metallised polyester film wrapped around a continuous filament core yarn.
• The core yarns are to be dyed to an appropriate colour so that the effects of grinning of the core yarn through the wrapping is minimised.
• The wrapping material is to be a non- tarnishing metallised polyester film, which is to be wrapped around the core yarn to give a smooth, metallic appearance.
• Metallic threads are to be resistance to oxidation and be dry clean.
• The shade of gold/silver is to strictly match that of the Standard Pattern (no noticeable variation in the shade will be acceptable).
• The complete yarn is to meet the requirements of Table 6. UK/SC/ 5146 refers.

4.6 Brass Fittings • The self-coloured polished brass fittings are to be treated with two coats of air-drying Lacquer prior to assembly with Buff Leather.
4.7 PVC • Should be, UV stabilised, black, patent finish to face, matt finish to back, thickness to conform to the standard pattern.

4.8 Hooks and eyes
• Nickel-plated, size 0 as on Standard pattern.

4. 9 Formers and runners
• Material, Size and shape to be as the appropriate Standard Pattern. Or an approved alternative.
4.10 Coloured Yarns and Core yarns
• All coloured yarns used in the manufacture of these items are to be of equal quality to those used in the standard pattern, and meet the test requirements of: Table 6 colour fastness.
• Coloured core yarns to be a suitable colour match to the outer cover yarns to prevent grinning through and meet the test requirements of: Table 6 colour fastness.
4.11 Sewing Thread • For leather, good quality flax should be used in a
shade to match standard pattern (sewing threads for leather items may be treated with beeswax).
• Thread, linen, flax, 3 cord to BS 7318.
• Thread core spun, to Table 5 of BS EN 12590 Metric Ticket No.75 or 50 as appropriate
4.12 Wooden Moulds • Wooden moulds used in the construction of a
pattern have been made from birch wood. Alternative materials may be used so long as the knot’s finished appearance and weight is not compromised when compared to the Standard Pattern.

Table 5 – Product Construction
5.1 Design and assembly of Knots
• The design, assembly and colour of the sword knots are to be strictly in accordance with that of the Standard Pattern.
5.2 General • Formers are to be covered to the design of the Standard Pattern.
• All sword knot embellishments & straps are to be firmly secured by hand stitching.
• On leather items, all ends of stitching are to be back-tacked by a minimum of two stitches.
• Leather point needles are to be used for all leather sewing.
• All sword knots are to be free from all ends of thread.
5.3 Measurements • All measurements specified in the schedules are in millimetres unless otherwise stated, See Schedules.
5.4 Packaging • All Sword Knots manufactured with gold and/or silver as per UK/SC/3933 will be first wrapped in acid free tissue paper (as per DEF STAN 81-89) before being packed in suitably sealed clear polythene bag, and labelled as per section 4.
• All other Sword knots are to be individually packed in suitably sealed clear polythene bag, and labelled as per section 4.
• Individually packed Sword Knots are to be boxed and delivered as detailed in the requirements of the contract.
