Transcript: Introduction Intheolddays,ifyouwenttodriveanywhere,alongtheroadstherewerecows,andfields,andfarms,andsomethingcalledbillboards .Theyweren’tBobBoards,theywereBillBoards .Thebillboardswereadvertisementsforeatingatrestaurants,orgoingWinchesterMysteryHouse,oranythinglikethat .Hugesignslikethis,stuckonacoupleofpoles .Andtheroadwouldcomebylikethat .Therewasn’tjustonebillboard,therewerethousandsofbillboards .Everyyouwenttherewerebillboards .Thereweresomanybillboards,theyhadtomakealawthatsays,“Youdon’tgettoputanymorebillboardsup .”Youcouldn’tevenseethetreesandthefarmsbecausetherewerebillboardseverywhere .
Onetimetherewasabigwindstorm,ahurricanecamealong .Andabunchofthebillboardsfellover .Andtheystartedflyingthroughtheair .Bighugerectanglesofflyingsteel,andtheychoppedhousesrightinhalf .Andtheysaid,“We’vegottodosomethingtomakesurethesebillboardsdon’tfalloverandkillpeople .”Andtheymadesomerules .
Theysaid,“Counthowmanysquarefeetthereareonyourbillboard .”Asquarefootwastwelveinchesbytwelveinches .“Andthenmultiplythattimesabouttwohundred .”Reallyonehundredforty-four .“Andthenmultiplythattimesone .Andyouendupwiththishugenumber .Inotherwords,ifyoucountedthesquarefeetonabillboard,theremightbe,oh,say,twohundredsquarefeet .Andthenyoumultiplythattimestwohun-dred .Doyouknowhowtomultiplybyhundreds?Yeah,it’seasy,youjustkeepaddingzeroes .Twohundredtimestwohundredisafour,withfourzeroes .Whatthatmeantwas,there’sfortythousandpoundspushingonyourbillboard .Andtheywouldtestittoseeifyourbillboardcouldholdfortythousandpounds .Well,aneasywaytodothatistoattachatanktoitandpull .Ifthebillboarddidn’tfalloverwithfortythousandpoundsonit,youcouldkeepit .Ifitdidn’t,youhadtomakeitstronger .
Andthefortythousandpoundscamefromwind--airpressurepushingonsomethingandtipitrightover,orinothercases,itcanmakeithoverabovetheground .Ifyoutookastrongwindandyoublewitdownwardswithafan,youcouldliftupheavythingsinthesameway .Ifyouhavesomethingthesizeofabillboardwithabigfanonit,youcouldpickuphugeamountsofweight .We’regoingtotrythatlatertoday .Butfirst,weneedacrazystory .

Story: “Jack and Jill and the Octomonsters”Onceuponatime,JackandJillwerelivingonaplanetthatwasflat .Here’saplanetthat’sflat,andit’sfloatinginspace .Andthere’spurplestarsallaroundit .Andcirclingallaroundtheplanettherewereman-eatingoctopuses .Man-eatingoctopuseswithlotsofarms .Andtheyhaveteeth .There--man-eatingoctopuses .Andeverybodythatlivedontheplanet,whentheyhadchildren,they’dtelltheirchildren,“Whateveryoudo,don’twalktooclosetotheedge,becauseifyoudo,andyoufalloff,you’llbeeatenbyhugeoctopuses .”Andthekidssaid,“Oh,Mom,you’rekidding .There’snosuchthingashugeoctopuses .”Sothemomwouldtakethekidsovertotheedge,andshewouldbringacheesesand-wich .Andshesaid,“Nowyoustayrightnearthisedge .I’mgoingtothrowthischeesesandwichover,andyoujustwatch .”Andshe’dthrowthecheesesandwichover,andnextthingyouknow,rightoutfromundertheedge--“Harrumfff!!”Thisoctopuswouldeatthecheesesandwichandgobackundertheedge .Andthekidswouldgo“Huuunnhhh!!”Andthey’dsay,“Oh,boy,we’renotgoingtogonearthatedge .”
AndEvilMisterFredlivedupheretoo .He’sgotacastle .Andofcourse,it’shisjobtomakepeoplemiserable .Andsohefigured,“I’mgoingtomakeadealwiththosemonsters .I’mgoingtoseewhatthey’lldoformeifIthrowpeopleovertheedge .”Becausehe’sevil .SoEvilMisterFredwenttotheedge,andhesaid,“Heyyymonsters!Youdownthere?”Andthemonsterssaid,“No!”Andhesaid,“Okay,I’llcomebacklater .”Becausehe’snottoobright .Andthenlater,hecamebackandsaid,“Heyyymonsters!Youdownthere?”Andtheysaid,“What’sittoyou?”

AndEvilMisterFredsaid,“Ihaveaplan .I’mgoingtomessuptheirfencesandI’mgoingtoputoilalloverthegroundsothatthey’llslipovertheedge .”Theretheygo--there’sfencesallthewayaround .
AndJackandJillstartedtheirgreatcontest .Everybodycametotheolympics,theywerewatchingit,therewastvcoverage,therewasblog-gingcoverage,therewasinternetcoverageofeverysort .Andtheyhadthejugglingontherollercoaster,andpeopleweretryingtojugglebowl-ingballsonarollercoaster .Andastheycamearoundturns,whooahh!Thebowlingballswouldshootoffthiswayorthatway .Youhadtobereallygoodtojuggleabowlingballonarollercoaster .Anditwasalsocompoundedbecausesometimestheentireplanetwouldstarttotiltoneway,andthenitwouldtiltanotherway,likeateeter-totter .Andtherewasastrongwind .Sometimesthewindwouldblowoneway,andsome-timesthewindwouldblowtheotherway .Ofcourse,thisallworkedinEvilMisterFred’sfavor .
Andhesaid,“Minions,I’vegotanidea .Let’sformalinehereatthetop,ofminions .AndwhenIsaygo,you’regoingtograbyourbaseballbatsandrunasfastasyoucan,hitanybodyyoufind,anddrivethemalltowardtheotherend .Andthenthey’regoingtogetsoscared,they’regoingtofallofftheedge .AndI’llgetgoldforeveryonethatfallsofftheedge .”Andhesaid,“Don’tworry,I’llberightbehindyouinmybull-dozer .”Youknowwhatabulldozeris?It’sabigthinglikeatankwithabladeonit,anditpushesearth .Hugebulldozer,likethat .

Experiment:Part 1: Balloon Demo
Ourfirstballoonisgoingtogounderthiscorner[placesballoonundercorneroffolded-uptable],thesecondballoonunderthatcorner .Now,there’stwoballoons,andtheyhaven’tpopped .Hmm .Let’sputbal-loonsundertheotherend .[Places two balloons under opposite end of table.]Ooh,theydidn’tpopyet .[Places balloons under the middle of the table.][Student],climbonthetable .Nowstandup,walkaroundtotheotherside .And[Student]isgoingtositonthetable .Sitanywayyoulike .[Student sits on the folded-up table which is being supported by balloons underneath.]Sitdown,makeyourselfcomfortable .
Okay,weneedavolunteerfromtheaudience .[Instructor selects four more students, who sit, one after another, until there are five students seated on the table.]Sofartheyhaven’tpopped .[Instructor stands on the table, with the students.]Okay,nowwe’vegotfivekids,andoneMr .Mac,allonthesametable .[Instructor steps off the table, then directs the students to get off, one at a time, first those in the middle, then those on the ends.]Thatjustshowsyouhowstrongairpressurecanbe .
Doyousupposethesearesuperballoons,thatthesearen’tordinarybal-loons?Weshouldtestoneandseeifit’sreallyasuperballoonornotasuperballoon .Soweneedsomebodytosteponit .[Places a balloon on the table while a student steps on it. It pops.]
Balloonspopwithjustalittlebitofpressureinthem,butthereweresomanyballoonsundertherethattheysmooshedwayout--didyouseehowskinnytheygot?Andeventhatlittlebitofpressurewasabletoholdallthosepeopleupwithoutpoppingtheballoons .Andsomebodythatdidthatexperimentsaid,“Yeah,thisisgreat .Let’strysomethingelse .”

Part 2: Leaf Blower Demo
So,ifyoutakealeafblower . . .[Demonstrates leaf blower hovercraft, with assistant sitting on it. With just a small push, it glides across the floor.]Ifyouwanttotrywhatit’slike,formalinebehindJen .YoumayhavenoticedthatJenhadtobalanceherself .Ifyouleanbacktoofar,thebackedgecatchesanditwon’tfloat .Ifyouleanforwardtoofar,thefrontedgecatchesanditwon’tfloat .Youhavetokindofbalancearoundandseewhereyourweightneedstobetomakeitfloat .[Students take turns sitting on the hovercraft while the staff push it back and forth.]Okay,that’safairlysimplehovercraft .
Part 3: Build a Hovercraft
We’regoingtomakehovercraft .Tomakeahovercraft,youneedatesttubewithaholeinit .Idon’tknowifyoucanseeit,butthere’salittletinyholeinthebottom .Usuallyscientistsputliquidinit .We’regoingtoputballoonsonit .AndIputaballoononthetesttube .
Thenwe’regoingtoputhandcuffsontheballoon .They’retiewraps .Thetiewrapisaplasticthingthathasgroovesonit .Ifyourunyourfingernailoveritandlisten,youcanhearit .Thegroovysidehasafingerthatcatchesontheminsidethathead .Soifyouputhistailinhismouthandpullonhistail,theballoonisnowtightonthetesttube .
Now,hovercraftusuallyhaveaflatcircle .AndoneofthebestthingsforaflatcircleisoldCDs .Adiscbyitselfwillfloatprettygood,becausethey’reflat,butitdoesn’thoverlikeahovercraftdoes .Weneedtoblowairunderit .Sowe’regoingtogluethetesttubeontop,andwhenyoublowuptheballoon,youblowairdown,andthiswillhoveracrossthetable .
Theonlyproblemis,it’shardtogetthetesttubeexactlycenteredonthehole .Sowemadeatesttubecenterer .Here’satesttubecenterermadeoutofanothertesttube .It’sgotaspringonit .YouputthatoneunderneathyourCD,andyoutakeyourballoonyoneandyoujamitontop .Now,it’ssittingonthere .It’ssprungagainstthis,andit’sallcenteredperfectly .
Wejusthavetoputglueontheedgebelowtheballoon .Wehavetouseenoughgluesothatnoaircanleakouthere .[Picks up glue gun.]Wewouldgosquirt,squirt,squirt,squirt .Justsquirtgluearound

Now,weneedsomewaytopuffitup .[Holds up balloon pump.]Here’sapuffer .Itpufferspuffswhenyoupulloutandpuffswhenyoupushin .Iftheglueishardenough,justsetitonthereandpuffitup .Ifyouhavehandsattachedtoyourarms,putyourhandsunderthetableandseeifthere’sanygumunderthere .Ifyoufindit,youcanhaveit .[While students’ hands are out of the way under the table, Instructor sends hov-ercraft gliding across the table.]Andnowwehaveahovercraft .Now,we’regoingtomakeourtablesmootherwithatablesmoothifier .[Lays a large sheet of smooth cardboard on top of the table.]
Sothefirstthingyouallneedisatesttube .Then,pickaballoon .[Sup-plies are passed out and students build hovercraft, testing them on the tabletop and on the floor.]

EvilMisterFredhasmadeanevilplantothrowpeopleofftheedgeoftheplanetandletthemgeteatenupbytheoctomonsters .Andhegetstheirweightingoldforeveryonethatgoesovertheedge .He’sriggeduparollercoastertothrowpeopleofftheedge .He’smovedtherain-bowsothatthefinish--theending--isovertheedge .Everythingisriggedsothatpeoplearegoingtofallover .AndJackandJillbecomeawareofhisevilplan,buttheyhavetotelleverybodyinthewholeplanet .AndJillsays,“Jack,you’vegottowarnthem .Dosomething!”AndJacksaid,“WhatcouldIpossiblydo?”AndJillsaid,“Yell,reallyloud .”AndJacksaid,“Okay .[in a very soft voice]Everybodywatchout .”Andtheydidn’thearhim .SoJillsaid,“Okay,Jack,I’llhelp .”Andwhenhestartedtoyell,shepulledonhisunderpants,andhewent[very loudly],“Everybodylookout!!!”Andthisjustpanickedallthepeopleontheplanet .Andeverybodywasrunningaround,andtheyallwenttothelocalrestaurantandgrabbedpancakes .Andthentheyputthepan-cakesontheground,laidfacedownonthem,andblewaholethroughthemiddleoftheirpancakes .Andtheycreatedsomuchairunderthepancakes,allthepeoplewerenowhoveringaroundonpancakes .Anditjusthappenedatthatveryinstantthewindchangeddirection,andtheplanettiltedthatway,andallthepancakehoverpeoplestartedtofallinthatdirection .Millionsandmillionsofhoverpancakepeople .Andtheycamedownandhitthebulldozerandalltheminions .Andtherewassomuchforcethere,thebulldozerhittheminionsandpushedtheminionsandthebulldozerandEvilMisterFredovertheedge .Andatthatveryinstant,theplanettiltedbackagain,andeverybodyelsewassaved .Andtheoctopusmonstersatethemallup--theminionsandEvilMisterFredandthebulldozerandtheirbaseballbats .AndtheyalllivedhappilyeverafterexceptEvilMisterFred .
