Origins of American Civil RightsFOLLOWING THE CIVIL WAR, Congress faced the challenging process of integrating millions of enslaved people – who had never possessed legal rights – into the country. To understand this critical moment of American history, participating teachers will take on the roles of 19th century members of Congress and make decisions about the future of American civil rights.

Teachers will …

• Considerthe19thcenturyeffortsforgreaterequalitywiththeabolitionofslaveryat the end of the Civil War.

• Take on the role of a member of Congress serving on the Joint Committee on Reconstruction.

• Review actual witness testimony from hearings following the end of the Civil War.

• Tour the U.S Capitol building while discussing the role of Congress during Reconstruction.

• Engage in a timeline activity to better understand and connect the civil rights effortsofthe19thcenturytothoseofthe20thcentury.
