Our consumer foods business

15www.kerrygraduates.com

Welcome to Kerry’s consumer foods business

Since the early seventies, our consumer foods business has grown from its origins as a small dairy cooperative in rural Ireland to become one of the largest chilled foods companies in the UK and Ireland employing some 9,500 people.

As a leading food manufacturer across markets in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, we know that keeping up with discerning customer demand means continuously improving every aspect of what we do. That means making the smartest use of the latest technology, streamlining our business processes, pushing quality levels and setting new standards of customer service.

16

Who we areWe’re behind some of the best known and best-performing brands in the market – Richmond, Galtee, Wall’s, Denny, Dairygold, Cheestrings, Charleville, Low Low and Pure to name but a few.

We’re also a leading producer of supermarket private label products, ranging from chilled and frozen ready meals and cooked meats to pastry, cheese and dairy products.

In everything we do, our mission is straightforward – to fill the country’s refrigerators with simply brilliant food.

I joined Kerry as a Graduate Process Engineer based in York in the UK.

In my first role, I was responsible for managing the installation of two new pieces of equipment as well as the complete analysis, evaluation and implementation of one particular piece of equipment.

After two years, I was posted to Germany as a Process Engineer with additional responsibility. Now my role includes auditing how processes run in production in order to understand the equipment or improve the operator’s procedures, organising trials for new equipment, interviewing contractors to evaluate their promised results and working with RD&A on new product development.

“What I like most about my job is its versatility. I am constantly challenged to solve problems, and with each feat accomplished, my confidence and ability develops. It is very powerful to know you can face any challenge and find a solution.”

I have been with Kerry for almost two years. I have progressed during this time from being a team leader managing 22 people to a group leader where I manage a multifunctional team of up to 75 people, in a high speed process environment. I am now currently leading a site-wide waste reduction project.

I was recently given the opportunity to go to the University of Kentucky on a two-week intensive Lean manufacturing course as part of my development, which shows the level of investment Kerry places in their graduates.

“No day is the same in Operations, which is what I enjoy most about my job. It is a fast paced environment and I am expected to deliver results through my team.”

MICHAEL OPERATIONS

When I joined Kerry, I was a trainee factory accountant in Rodgau, Germany. After 11 months in the role I was promoted to site factory accountant for the Rodgau site. I held this position for a year and a half until I moved to my current role in Commercial Finance on the Meat Technology pricing team.

Moving to the commercial team has also broadened my knowledge and has increased my commercial awareness. Currently, I am responsible for product costing for Meat products produced in the UK and Ireland. This involves analysing the raw material, factory and distribution costs and coming up with a product cost. Product costing involves communication across many functions ranging from factory accountants, account managers to product technologists.

“I have definitely progressed since I joined Kerry. Being made site accountant in Rodgau gave me great experience in Operations Finance and also meant that I had a lot of responsibility.”

JJACCOUNTING & FINANCE

I currently work as a Business Analyst as part of the Finance Control Team. My role involves being the bridge between IT developers and the business.

I am currently working as part of the Kerryconnect project team. This is a global project to deploy one single ERP system across Kerry sites worldwide. My role involves supporting current users by constantly improving our solution and answering their business requirements. In the deployment stage of the project, my role is to ensure that the ERP system is perfectly ready for a seamless implementation and a smooth go live.

I also work on planning for future releases by anticipating challenges and analysing their specifications.

“My role is quite varied depending on which stage of the Kerryconnect project I am working on, so there is no such thing really as a typical day.”

ADRIEN ICT

33www.kerrygraduates.com

I joined Kerry in August 2012 and am currently specialising in the Dairy and Culinary area of the business.

RD&A is not all laboratory work and recipe building. Although this is a huge part of it, there are many other areas that need to be mastered. Project management is a key aspect of this role and you need to be personable, outspoken and have a strong affinity for science with a good understanding of ingredients and how they interact.

It is hard to sum up my role as it covers so many areas of the business – giving technical support to production, taking part in flavour panels, recipe building, product development, customer engagement, project management… the list goes on.

“After six months, I was given the amazing opportunity to run a project in one of our sites in Denmark. The responsibility given to me was huge and is a true reflection of how much Kerry values the training and progression of their Graduates.”
