Tallassee Redevelopment Authority
Agenda for the day was approved. Mr. Bill Helms,Developer representing the owners of Patton Plaza and having in-formation regarding possible lease to Tractor Supply, presented aproposal regarding the lease of Patton Plaza.
The Tallassee Redevelopment Authority will request/meetwith City Council to make this proposal. All members of the Board of
Directors will be needed at the meeting with the City Council. Inaddition, it is recognized that there will need to be a special calledmeeting for public participation, input, and answering of questions. Mr.Helms' information included: Tractor Supply has agreed to a Letter ofIntent. The amount of investment expected will include potential sales2 - 2 1/2 million, the expected rebate from this will be $30,000 to$50,000 which will involve a 10 year lease. For them to receive therebate, it will be necessary to complete the full 10 years. There will beno rebate if the occupancy is only for 5 years. There was discussionabout whether or not it will include the entire shopping center and busi-ness not yet identified or scheduled for occupancy. The TRA does notencourage this, but only for Tractor Supply. Obviously, theExercise/Gym facility that already is in occupancy will not be affectedas they have no sales taxes involved. After discussion, the Boarddirected a proposal to include a 2% (note: two weeks later meetingchanged to 1 1/2%) tax rebate on the Tractor Supply development. Ifother facilities wish similar consideration, each will have to be separateproposals. All usual restrictions and other city ordinances must be met.

6 Tallassee Quarterly summer 2016
We are winding up a great year. May was certainly a busypart of the year for of all us, especially the seniors. Below isa list of events enjoyed by our Tallassee High School Seniors.
May 2nd we had three seniors representing THS at the Joe Sewell Award Banquet. They were sam smith, yolanda Walsh, and Dillion Davidson.
May 9th - Tallassee High School Music Banquet.
May 12th - We held our First Annual Tallassee High School “ Senior Walk” at THS.
May 12th - The THS Senior Awards Banquet is one of the highlights of the year for our seniors. There was an estimated 3 million dollars awarded in scholarships.
May 13th - A fun time for all! Our 4th annual THS SeniorPicnic was held at the Tallassee City Pool.
May 13th - At the J. E. “Hot” O’Brien Stadium the THS Spring Football Game VS Lafayette HS.
May 15th - THS held its Baccalaureate Service.
May 16th - 18th Final Exams at THS.
May 17th - The Tallassee City Board of Education Meeting was held at the THS Media Center.
May 19th - The Tallassee High school GraduationCeremony, was at 8pm at J. e. “Hot” O’Brien stadium.
I want to congratulate all ofour graduates this year.
We have kindergarten grad-uation, eighth grade grad-uation and certainly our highschool graduation. Again, congratulations! These areall milestones of our studentsalong their educational journey.
I want to thank everyone inour schools for helping this
school year be successful. Everyone plays an important role;secretaries, bookkeepers, child nutrition staff, aides, custodians, bus drivers, teachers and coaches, volunteers, and ad-ministrators. I personally want to thank the central office staff forall the support that they have given our schools this year. So manypeople play a vital role in educating our children. As virtualschools are emerging around us, we will not be able to replacethe value of all of these people and the impact they have oneducating our children.
As I reflect on my first year as Superintendent of Tallassee CitySchools, I would like to share some of my beliefs with all of you.Three priorities stand out to me; safety, proper balance, andimprovement. To begin with, the most important thing that we doeach day is keeping your children safe. Everything from securitycameras to riding on the bus, nothing is more important to you orme. My second belief is about finding that proper balance in ourschools. It is easy to get excited about improvements to the
baseball and softball facility and all of the extra-curricularactivities that our children are involved. Please know that thisschool year, we provided additional resources to expand ourone to one technology initiative, purchase new textbooks whenwe didn’t have enough state funds, pay for the AdvancedPlacement program after the grant was over, and paying fora special education field trip when there wasn’t enough fundingavailable. We need to be able to give our students the resourcesthat they need to be successful. It is especially important to pro-vide the resources to improve classroom instruction. My third be-lief is that we need to always strive to be our best and be betterthan we were yesterday. We should be in a constant cycle of im-provement.
We have had a productive year. I hope everyone will be rejuve-nated over the next couple of months and come back ready foranother year. We have a bright future ahead of us and I lookforward to it.

a Career Well spentMrs. Mona Norrell has spent the pasttwenty-seven years working in variousroles at Southside Middle School. Hertasks, at various times in her career, included mentoring students, serving asthe secretary, scheduler, and bookkeeper.“Whistling while she worked” is what shewas known for at SMS. Many of the du-
ties she performed were a product of her servant’s heart…not her job description. She touched the lives of studentsin immeasurable ways over the years. During her tenure atSMS she worked for seven principals. While on the job, sheendeavored through the transition from accounting via paperand pencil to the latest web-based software. Mrs. Norrell hasalways been behind the scenes at work during school fundrais-ers, assemblies, and nearly all SMS activities! She is knownfor her enthusiasm, willingness to always lending a helpinghand, and her love for students. Mrs. Norrell will be missed, yet not forgotten. All the surrounding area will miss this man of great football talent and community service. His life impacted many young men.
Pete CottleHis was a
life well-lived. His passion was communicating
with the people of Tallasseethrough his weekly newspapercolumn and 22 years of hosting thedaily morning show on WACQRadio.
I had known Pete since 1969, when as a high school kid, he gaveme a job at Tallassee Mills where he was the personnel director. Heloved his family, Tallassee and the Lord. I was blessed to have spentso many years in the company of a man who will always be an iconin the memory and history of Tallassee. He will be missed by many.
