The importance of buying recycledMinnesotans are among the top Recyclers in the Nation – 5th

MN Recycling rates … in 2017 we reported 1,952,029 tons of recyclable materials collected. • Rate Recyclables = 1,773 T/household • Municipal Solid Waste = 2,605 T/household

We can be the best recycling collectors in the world, but if we are not intentional about the circular nature of recycling we are missing a critical part of it.

Majority of glass collected in Minnesota goes to Strategic Materials in St. Paul and from there to fiberglass insulation manufacturers.Other uses include:

Glass

Outdoor Gas Fire pits Countertops Lighting

Insulation

Fiber Glass manufacturers using recycled glass • Owens Corning• Knauf Insulation

Past solutions were limited to government-run programs or private hazardous waste

haulers

Approximately 80 million gallons of paint are leftover or unused each year

In 2003, ACA & stakeholders began a dialogue to better manage

postconsumer paint 11 states plus DC have passed state-level, industry supported

paint stewardship laws

Carpet

Types of Recycled Carpet1)Nylon2)Polypropylene3)Polyester (made from recycled

water and beverage bottles)

Carpet Recycling Process

Carpet comes in from 40 + drop sites

Each piece of carpet is tested to identify the polymer type and to prevent cross contamination of the finished product

Post-Consumer Carpet (PCC) is recycled in one of several ways. There are several processes by which the carpet fibers can be recovered and reused. Bro-Tex collects and recycles over 12 million pounds of carpet annually.

1. Shearing: The process of shearing is to shave off the top 20% of the carpet face fiber separating it from the backing.

2. Grinding: The process of grinding is where the entire carpet is shredded into a fiber blend.

3. Pelletizing: The process of pelletizing is to melt the carpet fibers into a molten resin and cut it into pellets for extrusion and molding.

Carpet Recycling Processes

Nylon face fiber after shearing is extruded into pellets for molded and

extruded plastics or carpet yarn.

Nylon pellets are used in engineered resins, molded and

extruded plastics, or carpet yarn

Recycled carpet and pad could become:

New carpet New carpet pad Plastic drainage pipe Acoustic matting Oil absorbent material for water pollutants Concrete filler Road underlayment Plastic lumber Energy substitute for natural gas and coal

Potential Products and Markets for Recycled Consumer Carpet

Carpet Recycling and Impacts on the Environment About 45% of carpet is recyclable nylon

There are more than 6.5 billion pounds of carpet going into landfills inNorth America every year

By diverting 1,000 square yards of carpet from landfills, it saves :

• 440 gallons of oil, • 10,000 BTU’s of energy • diverts 4,500 lbs from a landfill

Recycling saves resources & creates jobs

Lithium Batteries in your everyday life.

• Li-Ion batteries are replacing most other rechargeable battery chemistries

• Lithium batteries have a much higher energy density than other rechargeable chemistries

• Many “dead” Li-Ion batteries still have significant energy and must be properly managed at end of life

• Lithium batteries require terminal protection to avoid thermal runway or sparking risks

DeconstructionHennepin County Deconstruction Grants

Funding available for building projects that use deconstruction techniques instead of standard demolition to remove materials from the destruction, alteration, or renovation of a building.

Homeowners and developers of residential properties can receive up to $5,000 to help offset the additional time and labor costs associated with deconstruction.

MattressesIt is estimated that 82 percent of a mattress can be recycled. Once disassembled and sorted, all recyclable materials are sold to make new products.

Recyclable materials include: • 30 percent metal • 38 percent cotton• 10 percent foam • 4 percent wool shoddy• The remaining 18 percent is synthetic materials

that cannot be recycled at this time
