I t all started when Ankit Kawatra, the founder of Feeding India, theHershey Goodness Hero of Delhi

Times, attended a grand weddingwhere more than 35 cuisines were be-ing served. He won-dered what would

happen to the excess food and decidedto stay back and find out.He saw heapsof excess food being sent straight tothe bin, which could have fed about5,000 people. At 22,he quit his well-pay-ing MNC job and bright careerprospects to do something that impactsmany lives around him. His aim is tomake India a hunger and food-waste

free nation.Feeding India aims to

solve the problem ofhunger, malnutritionand food wastage in ourcountry. It channelisesextra food from indi-viduals, weddings, re-staurants and corporateoffices to the people who really needit. It also serves freshly-cooked foodor raw grains to their partnered shel-ter homes and beneficiaries. The fo-cus is to provide a balanced diet andnutritious meals to children, elder-ly and specially-abled, who cannot

earn or afford food forthemselves. Startingwith a team of five in Au-gust 2014, Feeding Indianow has a network ofmore than 7500 volun-teers across 55 cities.

Recently, when a slumnear Mayur Vihar, Delhi

caught fire, residents lost not onlytheir houses but most of their be-longings, too. Feeding India starteda food donation drive and also donatedutensils and clothes. Ankit said, “Wepicked up freshly cooked food, whichincluded daal-chawal, from a restau-

rant at Bhikaji Cama Place. Wechecked its quality and then donatedit to the people in the slum nearMayur Vihar. We also gave themclothes and utensils, so that they canstart their life again.”

Ankit has also received an awardfrom Her Majesty the Queen ElizabethII, at the Buckingham Palace, Londonfor his good work.He was selected fromthe 17 United Nations Young Leadersrepresentatives for the sustainable de-velopment goals for his initiative.
