Dear Friends in Christ, Last week in my bulletin column I mentioned that,
when a priest is ordained, his hands are anointed with
sacred chrism, to set them apart to bless and conse-
crate, as the hands of Jesus. But there’s more: the old
custom, which was part of the old ritual and is still fol-
lowed in some places, was for the bishop to bind the
hands of the newly ordained priest with a linen cloth
called a manutergium. The priest would then remove
the oil from his hands with that cloth. A venerable
tradition was for the newly ordained priest to then give
that cloth to his mother, who would then have her
hands wrapped in it in her tomb. What an eloquent
symbol of the sacrifice the mother of a priest makes in
giving her son to God, just as the Blessed Virgin wrapped the body of her son, Jesus, in a linen cloth, after he was taken
down from the Cross after His sacrifice.
Not every woman is called to be the mother of a man called to the ministerial priesthood by the Church. But, every
woman who is baptized exercises the priesthood of the baptized, offering her life as a sacrifice for souls entrusted to
her care. One particular vocation of femininity is motherhood, when God calls some women to cooperate with His
plan to increase the number of His children on earth, and then to call them to spiritual adoption in baptism. Women
are called to be priests in this sense, and that spiritual priesthood is invested with incredible dignity. Without it, the
priesthood of the apostolic ministry could never exist!
In addition, there are not an infrequent number of Catholic women who deepen that baptismal priesthood with a voca-
tion within their vocation of spiritual motherhood to priests. They pray and sacrifice for priests as their spiritual sons!
In the last century, an intrepid parish priest, Msgr Alessandro Canora, gathered the mothers of his parish around to
challenge them to pray and sacrifice for the priesthood. His miniscule village of Lu in northern Italy produced 152
priests and 171 nuns during his time there! Every ten years, all of the priests and nuns that came from the village get
together for a reunion.
The website http://spiritualmotherhoodforpriests.blogspot.com has not been updated in a while, but is a useful resource
for women of our parish who may be exploring how spiritual motherhood of priests can be part of their spiritual disci-
pline. And to all of our mothers, thank you for saying yes to life!

Dr. Brant Pitre is an enthusias-
tic and engaging speaker who
regularly lectures throughout
the country. In this stunning
talk, Dr. Pitre applies his
knowledge of the Jewish roots
of Christianity to the very
heart of the Gospel: the love
of Christ. You will learn what it really means to have
a “personal relationship” with Jesus Christ as Lord, Savior, and Bridegroom.

Pope Paul VI taught us that the Holy Spirit is the
“Principle Agent” of evangelization. It is essential that
we seek his help and cultivate devotion to the Holy
Spirit. Over a century ago, Pope Leo XIII asked that
every church in the world pray the Novena to the
Holy Spirit every year in the nine days leading up to
Pentecost. The Novena to the Holy Spirit began on
11 May, but you’re encouraged to join. Novena
booklets are available in the Narthex.
Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your
faithful, and kindle in us the fire of Your love.
Send forth Your Spirit and we shall be created,
and You shall renew the face of the Earth.

If you are unable to receive Holy Communion for whatever reason, make a Spiritual Communion by reciting the following:
An Act of Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacra-ment. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacra-mentally, come at least spiritually into my heart, as though You have already come. I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be
separated from You.
Mary, on this day
when we honor all
mothers, we turn to
you. We thank
the Lord whom you
serve for the great gift
of motherhood. Never
has it been known that
anyone who sought
your intercession was
left unaided by grace.
Dear Mother, thank
you for your "Yes" to
the invitation of the angel which brought heaven to earth and changed
human history. You opened yourself to God's word
and the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.
Dear Mother, intercede for all of our mothers. Ask
your Divine Son to give them the grace of surren-
dered love so that they could join with you in giving
their own "Fiat." May they find daily strength to say
yes to the call to the sacrificial love- the very heart of
the vocation of motherhood. May their love
and witness be a source of great inspiration for all of
us called to follow your Son.
On this Mothers day, Mother of the Word Incarnate,
pray for us who have recourse to you...
In the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy
Spirit.

The Diocese of Charleston has partnered with The Newman Connection in an effort to connect graduating
high school seniors in our diocese with the campus ministry programs at colleges and universities throughout
South Carolina. It is critically important that we pursue every possible opportunity to connect our HS gradu-
ates with the Catholic resources available at their college or university. Studies have shown that young adults
respond to personal invitations from college campus ministry. Students/families may enter contact informa-
tion through the private link that will be directly provided to The Newman Connection. None of this per-
sonal information will be shared. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DHY3Z6D
