OBSERVATION SPACE : OWL

For the final project of our first semester, the task assigned is for us to intergrate the elements of architecture learned in the early semester with the ergonomic studies applied to few simple spaces required for an observation space; to observed the specific wildlife. ; in this case, the wildlife chosen is the owl, with the context of grassland.The design of this observation space requires to suite the natural behaviour of the animal so that the user can observe them without causing any harm or danger to the animal.

SEMESTER 1: HUMAN SPACEYEAR 1

CONCEPT

The idea of this observation space is to respond with the charac-teristics of the owl; which its eye as a focusing element of the design, converted into spaces.

View towards outside are the main focus, by maximizing the opening towards outside as much as possible via opening such as adjustable louvred pan-els and also more open spaces.

COLLAPSIBLE BUS SHELTER

For our second semester project, it was introduced with small scale project, which was a collapsible bus shelter, which was then to be built so that we would learn more about construction details of our bus shelter.

‘The Canopy” was one of the six design scheme selected to be built.

The materials proposed was timber; for stuctural members, and polycarbonate panels as roof material.

CANOPY: TRUSS SYSTEM

The idea started from the structure of the existing tree at the site itself. Focusing of how the tree transfers the load from its canopy to the ground besides its function as shelter from heat and glare, this bus shelter focuses on truss panel system for stability, durability and also to fulfill the collapbility requirement,

THE REMINDER

For our second year, first semester project, a project focusing on bigger scale with specific requirements were introduced, which is the moonsighting pavillion, at Jugra Hill, Banting. Details required for specific moonsighting and star gazing equipment were studied before designing.

The concept of ‘The Reminder” in relating to the limit of time that we had started from the verse of Quran itself.

The idea of this design scheme is to make full use of the beauty of the moon and the sun, where it became the reminder for the users about time; which is closely related to Islam prayer which is indicated by the color of the shy, shadows and the moon.

This pavillion is divided into three parts presenting 3 states of time each: DAY, transformation between day and night (SUNSET), and NIGHT.

MEETING TERRACES

The community center of Jalan Ir Haji Juanda was inspired by its role of a meeting point between thousands of users everyday from various back-grounds, especially during Sunday, where the road is closed to vehilcles to have weekly festivals of car free day.

The community opt to leave their personal cars to join the joy from the view point of the padestrians. They might come from different levels of background, but they are actually living under the same roof

Based in the surrounding com-munity, the gap between the rich and the poor is guite big. To achieve a level where the community communicates and interact towards each other, the gap is neede to be reduced. This design scheme is focusing on interactions; to make people see, meet and talk to each other.

C O N C E P T:

The idea is to expose the teenagers to the environment that they currently do not have in Chow Kit besides promoting environ-mental awareness and benefit of it, which Chow Kit is lacking of. This will no tonly gives benefit to the teenagers, it is also to the Chow Kit community and the public, for better living and with hope, better future.

“The lack of contact with nature is strongly af-fecting the behaviour of younger urban gen-eration..Richard Louv coined the term ‘Nature Deficit Disorder’ to describe the behaviour of children who grow with minimum contact with

nature.

SCENT GARDEN, which is a part of the skill learning and environ-mental programme for the teenagers.

CENTRAL COURT YARD, The center of this courtyard acts as the meeting intersection of users from different spaces and activities and at the same time, create the element of interaction between the users.

WATER GARDEN with hammocks, so they could enjoy the calming sound of the water and also could relax themselves and heal their emotional pain.

URBAN PLAZA, this plaza will act as a stage that introduces the Chow Kit teenagers to the public from the Youth Cafe programme and also the performance that they’ll have at the multipurpose hall which could be open to the plaza; to the public.

URBAN FARM, which is another programme for the commitment of Chow Kit teenagers. This program will collaborate with Chow Kit Youth Cafe.

YOUTH CAFE, this cafe will not only prepare the teenagers for brighter future with job skills, it also promotes the interaction between the teenagers and the public.

Chow Kit Commuity College:Giving Back to the Community

Robstness of Chow Kit where people gather and play chess under the shade of a tree at Jalan TAR. The parklet at the side of community college will correspond to this community activity.

Sense of place:The ambiance of 5-foor way of shop-houses should be continued towards the building.

Nearby node:Al-Ibrahim Maju Restaurant that become a place where people meet and interact.The pocket park facing this corner will be correspond to this restaurant.

From the idea of having a big open space for the public, a massing study were done in search for the best massing that corresponds to the idea with the consideration of the site context.

From thie final type of massing study, all possibilities of activities and building programming were studied, focusing on the triple vol-ume open space.

The design intention of this scheme started with the concern of the lack of interaction between the public and the street people. Lack of interaction between modules, between students and public, between public and the students. Therefore, the main concern is the interaction itself. How can this scheme make people gather at a point and interact with each other?

A parklet is a small space serving as an extension of the sidewalk to provide amenities and green space for people using the street.It is typically the size of several parking spaces.

Parklets are intended for people. Parklets offer a place to stop, to sit, and to rest while taking in the activities of the street.

G R O U N D F L O O R P L A NThe entrance welcomes the visitors and passer bys with interesting landscape and flexible street furnitures for public use, act as an interactive urban plaza that brings people together.

Parklets as a point of attraction

In response to the nodes at Jalan TAR where there are always peo-ple playing chess under trees at the big padestrian walkway Jalan TAR.

The idea of having a distance of 3 metres between each steps is to give the idea to the users that they are not climbing steps. They are just walking in an urban plaza.

With response to the nearby res-taurant and community college’s cafateria. This little space is a con-tinuation of the eateries, providing a nature,garden-like environment for people to have lunch, etc.
