Importance
1. US Navy = Seagoing Force = Lots of Water!!!
2. Thousands of drowning deaths every year because people
did not follow water safety rules.
3. Swimming requires more physical endurance than all
other sports.

Class Objectives
1. Understand water safety rules and the importance of
always following them.
2. Understand heat and cold injuries associated with
swimming.
3. Identify the different survival swimming methods, water
entry methods, and proper times for their use.
4. Identify the requirements for US Navy/USNSCC Second
Class and Third Class swimmer.

Water Safety Rules
• Be aware of your
surroundings.
• No running on pool deck.
• No talking unless you are a
swimmer in distress.
• Do not get in the pool until
told to do so by a
lifeguard/instructor.

Open Water Safety Rules
• Be especially aware of your
surroundings.
• Check depth before diving
in.
• NEVER swim alone.
• Wait 30 minutes after eating
to avoid cramps.

• Cold water – hypothermia.
• Hydrate properly.

Entering the Water
• Feet first – jetty jump
• Sit and lower into pool
• Stride jump
– Head out of water
• Shallow Dive
– To get somewhere quickly
1.Check the water for obstacles or other persons
2.Step/jump far enough away from the vessel
3.Cross legs and arms upon entry (most don’t do this and it hurts)
4.Kick for the surface and swim away from the vessel as quickly as
possible
5.Look for others that need help

3rd Class Swimmer• Has demonstrated Basic Swim Qualifications
• Deep Water Jump from a minimum of 5 feet
• Swim minimum of 50 yards, using at least one of the below strokes
– front crawl stroke\
– sidestroke
– elementary backstroke
– breast stroke
• Remain afloat for 5 minutes (prone only)
• Blouse / Trouser Inflation

2nd Class Swimmer
• Meets 3rd Class Requirements
• Remain afloat for 10 minutes (5 min prone, 5 min back)
• Swim minimum of 100 yards (demonstrating all strokes)
– 25 yards front crawl stroke\
– 25 yards sidestroke
– 25 yards elementary backstroke
– 25 yards breast stroke

1st Class Swimmer
• Meets 2nd Class Requirements
• 25 yard underwater swim (demonstrating “burning oil maneuver twice)

• Enter water feet first (water depth 5 feet)
• Remain afloat for 10 minutes (5 min prone, 5 min back)
• Swim minimum of 100 yards

– 25 yards breast stroke
