Summer Skills Sharpeners
www.summerskills.com
Oakcrest School recognizes that summer math and language arts
enrichment and/or review aid retention of skills learned during the
school year and help foster a greater interest in the study of these
subjects. Your daughter’s current teacher can help inform your
decision about program/level choices. The information below is for
one workbook series that our faculty have reviewed and recommend
as good options for families on the go in the summer.
These grade-level review booklets, published by Tri-C Publications,
are available for individual order. They include help pages,
glossaries of terms, regular lesson reviews, and, in the math booklets,
detailed answer keys that show all the steps needed to complete the
different problems and assignments successfully.
A general description of the series and
ordering information can be found at: www.summerskills.com
Textbook Purchasing Information
1. The earlier you purchase your books, the more likely it is you will be able to obtain used
books at lower prices. Parents are encouraged to purchase books from other families at
the OPA Used Book and Uniform sale.
2. Used books are welcome and usually widely available online. It is not necessary to
purchase online access codes with used books, and books without CDs are acceptable,
except for the Music Theory text for which students will need the CDs.
3. On the textbook list, bold font indicates books that are new adoptions to Oakcrest this
year, and therefore likely not available from other parents. However, even for new
adoptions, used books may be available online.
4. Use the 13 digit ISBN number to locate the correct title.
Books that should be purchased as new or unmarked:
1. Workbooks and Activity Books, which are indicated on the textbook list with
two asterisks (**), must be previously blank for student completion.
2. Novels for literature (Gr. 6-12) and Classical Philosophy (Gr. 12), indicated
with one asterisk (*) should also be unmarked. Students annotate both
independently and as a class. To facilitate class participation, please purchase
the exact copy listed.
5. If you would like to use Amazon to purchase your books, Oakcrest’s Textbooks are listed
here by grade:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/richpub/listmania/byauthor/A3I2I2ZL3U6MLP/ref=cm_lm_
pthnk_athr?ie=UTF8&lm_bb. Only purchase books for classes for which your daughter
is registered. Course names are indicated in the comments.
6. Here are links to other online vendors that might be useful:

7. If a discrepancy arises between the ISBN and the year of publication or edition, the ISBN
is the more accurate indicator.
8. Some book purchases will depend on prior course approval and/or placement testing.
Returning students will be notified about placement at the end of the school year. New
students will be notified about placement following the registration and placement test
process.
9. Some books are used for multiple grades and should be retained:
A. The MLA Handbook and Elements of Style will continue to be used for
grades 11-12 for students who have already purchased it.
B. The Little English Handbook will be used by 9th
grade students for all Upper
School English courses.
C. Perrine’s Sound and Sense is used for grades 10-12.
D. Puntos de Partida is used for Upper School Spanish III-IV.
E. The Theology text Understanding the Scripture: Complete Course is used in
grade 9 and grade 10.
F. The Bible is used for all Upper School Theology courses.
10. Oakcrest Textbook Fees: Two grades will have a small textbook fee due to better bulk
pricing and availability. These resources will be distributed in class by the teachers.
Please send a check made payable to Oakcrest School for the appropriate amount with
“Textbooks” indicated in the Memo Line.
a. Grade 6: $25 for Study Skills Workbook
b. Grade 9: $21 for Study Skills Workbook, Great Adventure Bible Timeline

Summer Reading Assignments
“Reading Woman” by Graciella Scarlatto
“Those of us who have been true readers all our life seldom fully realize the enormous
extension of our being which we owe to authors. We realize it best when we talk to an
unliterary friend. He may be full of goodness and good sense but he inhabits a tiny world.
In it, we should be suffocated. The man who is contented to be only himself, and therefore
less a self, is in prison. My own eyes are not enough for me, I will see through the eyes of
others.”
--C.S. Lewis
Reading offers a lifetime of pleasure and enrichment, a continuing education of the head and
heart. We expect by requiring our students to spend some of their free summer time reading that
they will improve their reading skills as well as develop the life-long habit of reading.
In keeping with these convictions, Summer Reading follows a few precepts:
The summer reading books should not have their pleasures sapped by elaborate study
guides or note taking. However, we do encourage annotating the text while reading.
The summer reading books are not to be “read” via Spark Notes.
We encourage the reading of different authors and books. Do not choose books you have
already read.
Assignment: Follow the directions for each grade in choosing the texts. To ensure that the
reading has been completed, early in the first quarter the English teachers will administer an
assessment on the summer reading books. The format and weight of the assessment will depend
on the grade level and the teacher. The grade of the Summer Reading will figure into the first
quarter grade for each student.
We hope you enjoy your reading.
