DESCRIPTION
A programme brochure about the Summer of Icelandic Cinema in Bio Paradis 2011
Citation preview
One of Bio Paradis’ most
important tasks is to give the
public regular access to the
Icelandic cinema heritage. It is thus
with great pride that we introduce
for the fi rst time a summer long
programme featuring a wide selec-
tion of Icelandic fi lms from a twenty
eight year period. All fi lms are
screened with English subtitles.
The oldest fi lm in the programme
is the excellent The House (Egill
Edvardsson, 1983), described at
the time by noted fi lm scholar Peter
Cowie as “a spectacular and as-
sured debut”. He adds: “The
House shares with Don’t Look Now,
Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist
a vivid sense of the spiritual world at
work in everyday life.” The fi lm has
just been restored and is presented
in a brand new digital print.
The latest fi lm in the programme
is Stormland (Marteinn Thorsson,
2011), a pitch-black comedy with
elements of grand guignol and and
excellent central performances from
Ólafur Darri Ólafsson and Elma Lísa
Gunnarsdóttir. Both won The Edda,
The Icelandic Film and TV Awards,
last February for their work.
Co-incidentally, both fi lms were pro-
duced by veteran DoP and producer
Snorri Thorisson.
The fi lms are divided into fi ve
sections. The Modern Day section
features fi lms that deal with the
present, most of them take place
in Reykjavik and vicinity and show
our fi lmmakers vision of modern
urban life in Iceland. The Period Films range from medieval times
through to the nineteeneighties. The
Land and Sea section contains fi lms
that feature strongly the elements
of nature and in the Family Films
category you’ll fi nd most of the
output for the last two decades in
that fi eld. Finally the Documentaries
section provides a cross-selection
of recent offerings, the majority
dealing with the eternal struggle of
man vs. nature.
The Icelandic cinema has been go-
ing strong for over thirty years now
and this year looks very promising
indeed. Icelandic audiences have
generally been very supportive of
local fi lms and many of them have
travelled the world, picking up multi-
ple awards at international festivals.
The discovery is yours!

The amazing story of one of the
biggest rescue operations Iceland
has seen when a huge avalanche
hit a small fi shing village, Flateyri,
on October 26th 1995. Before an
outside help reached Flateyri, the
locals were on their own during the
fi rst fi ve hours, searching and digg-
ing up their neighbors, friends and
relatives and organizing the rescue.
Many obstacles, such as storm and
further danger of avalanches, were
present as rescue teams nation-
wide, helicopters and ships tried to
fi nd their way to Flateyri. This snow
avalanche was one of the deadli-
est in Iceland’s history, and 1995 is
recognized as being the most costly
in human lives in recent local history
of natural disasters. The story is
told by rescuers, media people, the
former president of Iceland, and
survivors who some were under the
snow for 9 hours.
