Greetings to all of our St. John’s family. This is the “summer issue”
of our St. John’s Lutheran Church newsletter. It contains information
for both June and July. Usually, churches become less busy with
everyone taking time for vacations and summertime projects. According
to a 2017 Associated Press NORC Center for Public Affairs Research
poll, 57% of you will be taking a vacation of some kind or another. Of
that, 75% drive; 21% fly; and 4% use other methods. Traveling is a
big part of summertime activities.
I remember as a kid hearing the saying, “God doesn’t take a vacation from you.....don’t you take a vacation from God.” So often, vacation
itineraries involve places to see; people to visit; events to participate
in.....but what about going to church? Many times, families aren’t
aware of where the local Missouri Synod church is and so, don’t attend
on vacations.
Well, our Lutheran Church Missouri Synod has a neat “locator” tab on
their home page where you can find LCMS churches near where you are
traveling to. It’s easy to use and can locate by city or zip code.
Simply go to https://www.lcms.org ....hit the locator tab, and this is
what you will
see....
May you all have
a safe and
blessed summer
and take Jesus
with you
wherever you go.

Worship for Shut-Ins Sermon Summaries
June 3, 2018 – Second Sunday after Pentecost Psalm: 81:1-10; Epistle: 2 Corinthians 4:5-12; Gospel: Mark 2:23-3:6 “Treasure in Jars of Clay” - Sermon Text: 2 Corinthians 4:5-12 - Rev. William Mueller We all easily recognize our human weaknesses and limitations. Our health is fragile and frail – the clay pots, which are so easily broken, remind us of this frailty. But living and dwelling within us is a treasure beyond measure – a treasure that will impact every aspect of our life today and every moment of our future!
June 10, 2018 – Third Sunday after Pentecost Psalm: 130; Epistle: 2 Corinthians 4:16-18; Gospel: Mark 3:22-35 “Out of the Depths” - Sermon Text: Psalm 130 - Rev. Dr. Walter Maier III There are times when we feel burdened by a sin or sins that we have committed, overwhelmed with guilt. At such times we are to cry out to the Lord, pray to Him, for mercy. Psalm 130 tells us how God will respond, and why.
June 17, 2018 – Fourth Sunday after Pentecost Psalm: 1; Epistle: 2 Corinthians 5:1-10; Gospel: Mark 4:26-34 “Living in a Tent” - Sermon Text: 2 Corinthians 5:1-10 - Rev. Paul Shoemaker By their very nature tents are designed to be temporary housing. St. Paul reminds us that our body is an earthly tent, designed to be a temporary dwelling. There is a permanent dwelling for us. That is when we are at home with the Lord.
June 24, 2018 – Fifth Sunday after Pentecost Psalm: 124; Epistle: 2 Corinthians 6:1-10; Gospel: Mark 4:35-41 “Who Is This?” - Sermon Text: Mark 4:35-41 - Rev. Daniel Brege Who is this, asleep in the boat? It is Jesus, a man who gets tired and is even able to die...just like you and me. Who is this who calms the violent wind and sea? It is Jesus, the eternal Son of God who, by His death and resurrection, has come to still the tumultuous, all-destroying wind and sea of sin and death.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2018
You are invited to join St. John Lutheran Church,
Lansing as we venture to an uncharted island where
kids discover the truth that Jesus carries
them through life’s storms. Our Vacation
Bible School will be held for all children
ages 4 years through 6 th grade. We also
encourage children to bring along a friend who may not attend
one of our churches but are looking for a chance to discover the
love of Jesus.
The SHIPWRECKED adventure will be in operation from
Tuesday, June 12th through Thursday, June 14th at St.
John’s Lutheran School, 18100 Wentworth Avenue in
Lansing. The excitement will start each day at 9:00 and
end at 11:45. Students will make crafts, sing songs, have a
snack, and play games while learning the lessons of Jesus,
our Forever Friend.
Please fill in the Student Registration and/or Volunteer
form at the end of this newsletter and give it to the office,
or VBS directors, Sue Olson and Mary Wells.

HYMN OF THE MONTH
The following hymn, “Children of the Heavenly Father” LSB 725
and “My Hope is Built on Nothing Less” LSB 575, was chosen by
Mary Wells as our “hymn of the month.” She “won” this honor as
she bid for it at our November auction. These songs will show up
in one form or another during worship services in the months of
June and July. The first hymn goes well in June with “Father’s
Day” and the second hymn is a great hymn of faith. \
Children of the heavenly Father
safely in his Bosom gather;
Nestling bird nor star in heaven
such a refuge e'er was given.
God His own shall tend and nourish;
In His holy courts they flourish.
From all evil powers He spares them;
in His mighty arms He bears them.
Neither life nor death shall ever
From the Lord His children sever;
Unto them His grace He showeth,
And their sorrows all He knoweth.
Though He giveth or He taketh,
God His children ne’er forsaketh;
His the loving purpose solely
to preserve them pure and holy.

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
No merit of my own I claim
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
Refrain
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand.
When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In ev’ry high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil.
His oath, His covenant and blood
Support me in the raging flood;
When ev’ry earthly prop gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.
When He shall come with trumpet
sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found,
Clothed in His righteousness alone,
Redeemed to stand before His
throne!

ONE SENTENCE SERMONS
God grades on the cross, not the curve.
God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage.
Having Truth decay? Brush up on your Bible!
The person who angers you, controls you!
Those who are good at making excuses are seldom good for much
else.
The one who kneels before God, can stand before anyone.
Kindness is difficult to give away, because it keeps coming back.
Most people want to serve God, but only in an advisory capacity.
Never give the devil a ride – he will always want to drive!
Nothing ruins the truth like stretching it.
Plan ahead, it wasn’t raining when Noah built the ark.
