Sports Camp Q & A
Why Should You Choose CARD Sports Camps? If you have a child that loves sports and wants to try different sports throughout the summer, we have something for you. Your child will be in a fun, safe and sports savvy environment. We teach and fine tune (for the more advance players) basic fundamentals of the sport that will help your child succeed in that sport and most importantly walk away with a love for the game. We stress the importance of team work, sportsmanship and fun.
Where are the Sports Camp held? Camps are located within Community Park located on MLK Dr. off of 20th street. (unless noted otherwise) Depending on the sport, we are using either the gym or the fields for our day of fun. Camp meeting location will be listed on each specific sport camp online.
What happens in the full day options versus the half day options?Mornings are filled with sport specific fundamentals and game play from 8:00 am to noon. The half day option officially ends at 12:15 pm. If your child is staying for the full day, we focus on fun activities and games related to the sport, but also give a little down time. With our years of experience we have found that making the afternoon less sport specific creates a variety for the children so they do not become bored or disinterested in the sport. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon we take the B-Line to Shapiro Pool for a splashing good time!
What experience does the sports camp staff have?We hire friendly, positive, high energy and knowledgeable staff who love teaching and sharing their love of the game with all participants. Cathy’s Sew & Vac Sew Cool Kid’s Club “Sewing Through Summer”Come and join our expert instructors and learn sewing skills during your summer break. You will need to bring a small “sewing kit” that includes some scissors for cutting fabric, some thread trimming scissors, a hem gauge and pin cushion & pins. We prefer the magnetic “Grabbit” type but any is fine as long as it keeps the pins off the floor! It is best to bring your own sewing machine in good working order so that you can become more familiar with it but if you do not have your own, you can rent one from Cathy’s Sew & Vac on the first day for $15 for the week’s classes. You are welcome to bring a snack-we have bottled water for you! Completion of proposed projects contingent upon student age, skill level and abilities. We want everyone to have fun and LEARN! Instructor: Cathy’s Sew & Vac Staff. Cathy’s Sew & Vac, 2418 Cohasset Rd.
Get in the Swim of Things! Come and make a tote bag out of screening. Yes, we mean that stuff that is similar to what keeps the bugs out! You will sew a bag to take to the lake, beach or pool. The mesh allows the sand to sift out and the contents to dry easily. You will also make a convertible towel. It’s a towel that folds into its own bag! Very ingenious. And last, you will make a friendly stuffed whale that could double as a decorative pillow. Please bring a beach towel for the convertible towel project.

FAQ’s:
Q: How do I sign my child up?
A: To find out if your child’s school has openings, or to get on the waiting list, contact the CARD office at 895-4711. Many schools have little or no waiting list. However, CARD recommends you put your child on the waiting list when they are 2 years old to help ensure you will have a spot when they enter school.
Q: Do I have to put my child on the waiting list each year?
A: No. Once you put your child on the waiting list, you stay on until you are offered a spot in the program. Please make sure to contact us to update your phone number and address if they change.
Q: Once my child is enrolled, do I have priority enrollment for the next school year?
A: Yes! You will be notified of priority re-enrollment meetings in the spring of each year. You must attend one of these meetings and pay the fee for August at that time to secure your spot for the next school year.
Q: Does my child have to attend every day?
A: No. The program is for your benefit, and you may use it as you feel necessary. The fee for the program is a flat rate fee. CARD does not prorate for days not attended.

Coach of the Quarter:Dirk Lacy Jr and Marcus HopkinsDirk and Marcus has been graciously volunteering their time as co-coaches the past three seasons with our girls’ elementary basketball league. They are some of the most encouraging and enthusiastic volunteer coaches that CARD has had the pleasure of having on staff. Dirk and Marcus have a special ability to make sure each girl is having fun while learning the fundamentals of the game. Marcus and Lacy say that watching the players grow and succeed over the season is the reason they coach. These two are great with all of their players and try to teach how they can be a “family” and help each other throughout the season. Lacy and Marcus are a duo that helps bring a positive and high energy to the CARD environment that makes the games for fun to watch. Dirk and Marcus are highlights to watch each season, and continue to help each of their players grow not only as basketball players, but as people. Thank you Dirk and Marcus for helping bring a “love of the game” each and every game!

League MovementTeams may be subject to move from their league of choice at the discretion of the Recreation Supervisor if it is deemed for the benefit of the CARD softball program. Prior history and records will be considered when it comes to league placement. Spring or Summer league champions MAY be moved up to a higher league for the subsequent season if also deemed appropriate and teams who struggle in a given league may also be moved down. The goal here is to facilitate proper league placement over the course of time, while teams may not consider themselves a “B” or “C” level team, they may be one of the top teams playing on that evening and it may be necessary that they play in that league.
