Enjoying Hamburg
Port of Hamburg: The port of Hamburg is located on the river Elbe and is the largest port in
Germany, while being the second largest in Europe (after Rotterdam). It covers an area of
7399 km² and more than 13.000 ships are entering the harbor each year. The best way to
discover the Hamburg port is on a Barkasse, a small boat that goes through the harbor and
the “Speicherstadt”, the largest ware house complex build on timber-pile in the world.
Every Sunday from 05:00 am till 09:30 am a traditional fish market takes place at the
Hamburg port. Since 1730 everything imaginable is sold here and the auctions are very
entertaining.
Reeperbahn and St. Pauli: The Reeperbahn at St. Pauli was once known as the sinful mile of
Hamburg. Nowadays it is a melting pot of cultures, international people, partying, bars and
some leftover parts of the red light district. Next to the Schanzenviertel this is the main party
area in Hamburg offering all styles of music from rock to house to reggae. The famous St.
Pauli soccer club has its stadium here as well.
Parks and the Zoo: The zoo “Tierpark Hagenbeck” is the first zoo without barred cages in
Germany. It was founded in 1907 and is still today the only zoo in Germany which is private
owned. In 2007 a new tropical aquarium was opened next to the already existing Asian
steppe, elephant house, African panorama, ice world, giraffe complex and many more.
Concerning nature in Hamburg there are two beautiful parks: “Planten and Blomen” and
the city park. Planten and Blomen offers a large range of colorful flowers and every night in
summers there is a water light concert in the centre of the park. The city park is the largest
one in Hamburg and there are various possibilities to spend your spare time like playing
soccer, swimming or visiting the planetarium located at the northern end of the park.

Historic Hamburg
o Michel Church: The St. Michaels church is located near the harbor and is one of the
five protestant churches in Hamburg dedicated to archangel Michael. The church
tower offers a brilliant view over Hamburg and the interior of the church is mostly
kept in white which is well worth seeing. http://www.st-michaelis.de/
o Old Elbtunnel: In 1911 the Old Elbtunnel was officially opened as an under river
connection between St.Pauli and Steinwerder on the other side of the river Elbe.
Since 2003 the Elbtunnel is under historic protection but still being used by
pedestrians to cross the river. You can visit the Elbtunnel and go for a walk to cross
over to Steinwerder and then go back with the ferry to the harbor.
o Television Tower: The radio telecommunication tower is one of the most famous
landmarks in Hamburg. It was built in 1965-1968 with a height of 279,2 meters. There
are eight platforms, one of them being the observation platform and a restaurant.
The famous stuntman Jochen Schweitzer installed a bungee jumping base here.

well as the history of Hamburg. The Mönckebergstraße, Hamburg’s main and largest
shopping street leads from the town hall to the central train station.

Hamburg. It is surrounded by historical buildings and shopping malls. In summer the
