What we doStudent Media produces three products
1. Accent Student Newspaper– 6 issues per semester, 3000 copies distributed to
all campuses and some centers
– 122 broadsheet pages in 2009-2010
– 100% student produced journalistic product
– Student editors make all editorial / content decisions
– SL pays salaries and some travel expenses
– Advertising revenue pays for production and other expenses

2. Accent Online– Online version of newspaper featuring content
from print edition plus timely updates, additional information and multimedia products
– Hundreds of photos presented in slideshows and Flickr stream
– Supplementary and stand-alone video
– Produced by Accent staff
– 100% Student produced journalistic product

3. Life4U– 100% student produced marketing product
– Adviser takes more active role in project management than Accent products
– Students target and adjust the product to the needs of the customer (Student Life)
Who We Are Fully staffed, competitive positions
– Accent - EIC, Assistant Editor, Life and Arts, Campus, Photo, Layout, Production Intern
• Accent – Over 30 Contributing Students
– Life4U – 2 Designers, 3 Writers, 2 Photographers (All Students)
Accent Adviser is facilitator, educator, employee supervisor, administrator, critiquer and content adviser when asked (never determines content)

Accent Print Edition
– Two week production cycle (except for holidays)

– Majority of content posted two days before print edition
– Some breaking stories posted as they break
– Students pushing for scheduled weekly updates

Life4U
– Two month production cycle (usually June and July)
– Distributed annually at orientations

– Professional journalism and communications skills
– Portfolio development
– Preparation for transfer and freelance opportunities
– Responsible use of First Amendment rights Provide a voice for the student body Provide information, analysis, opinions and
entertainment to ACC community

TCCJA and TIPA travel paid for as incentive, training, networking, professional development

How people get involved All students in good standing can contribute to
Accent
– Fill out online form at any time
• Will be added to e-mail list
• Editors may contact them directly
– Attend semester orientations and training sessions as possible
– Pitch story at meeting or directly to an editor
– Receive assignment
– Work with editors on revisions
– Hit deadlines
How people get involved Experienced students in good standing and with a
2.5 minimum GPA can apply for hourly editor positions
– Students must have 10 experience points to be eligible to apply
Motivated students can apply for “in training” work-study or volunteer positions
Students can complete a paid departmental internships through us
How people get involved Faculty can work with us or utilize us in a variety of
ways
– Submitting work to Accent can be a class assignment
– Departments with relevant internship requirements can place interns with us
– Adviser and editors are available to speak to classes
– Adviser is open to collaborating on projects and allowing students to use the media lab
