In contrast, our
collective debt is
subsidizing NYU--NOT
the other way around.
Their ability to take
on further debt through
bonds is based in part
on "the university's
highly valuable and
marketable real estate"
(Moody's Financial
Ranking)
HOUSING ISA
HUMAN RIGHT
Faculty housing at NYU is
inseparable from the
historic cycles of
displacement. We live on
the occupied lands of
Lenni Lenape peoples.
While it may be owned by
NYU it does not belong to
them or to us. In recent
decades, low-income
residents have been
displaced from the East
Village, Lower East Side,
and Greenwich Village.
New residential
developments in Lower
Manhattan further
enclose and exclude by
increasing land and rent
values. In Manhattan,
neighborhoods with new
and expensive
residential units
approved are right
around the corner from
us: Midtown,
Clinton/Chelsea, and the
Lower East
Side/Chinatown.
A rent strike gives us a
chance to build
solidarity with
neighbors currently
facing displacement and
with our many
unsheltered neighbors.
Let's fight now to turn
vacant property into
housing, expand rental
assistance programs and
invest in permanent,
high-quality social
housing for everyone.
