Strategy: Flip the Sound

Goal: Accuracy

Adapted by Donna L. Barrett

What is Flip the Sound?

• Flip the sound is a strategy good readers use when they come to a word that doesn’t sound right or make sense.

• Knowing the multiple sounds a letter or letter combination can make and being able to flip the sounds around is an essential skill.

When do I use Flip the Sound?

• When you are sounding out a word use the strategy of flip the sound and listen for a word you recognize.

• Then check to make sure that word makes sense in the sentence.”

Combining Strategies

• Flip the Sound is a great strategy to use with Cross Checking. Remind yourself to look at the word and ask, “Does it look right, does it sound right, does it make sense?” If it doesn’t sound right, then you know to flip the sound a try to read the word again.

• Remember to ask yourself “What other sound could that letter make?”

When a word ends in a “magic e” in a vowel – consonant- vowel word, the first vowel is long and the “e” at the end of the word is silent.

Now lets play a game and practice sounding out some words, then we will add a “magic e” and practice our strategy “Flip the Sound”.
