Strengths: Strong government support through Ministries of Health and Education.

Committed Alumni. Graduates from programmes – graduates in key posts in tourism and hospitality in the Caribbean.

Over 150 doctors graduated from the undergraduate programmes and several postgraduates.

Majority of Medical Consultant staff and Practitioners graduates of UWI

.Several graduates of the Law programme in

key positions in legal firms. Cost of tuition very competitive with local

and international institutions. UWI Research output and Consulting

opportunities more applicable to regional issues.

Weaknesses: Single full time faculty in major specialties

in Medical School resulting in heavy dependence on part time and associate lecturers.

Varying academic output from staff CHTM and lack of academic leadership.

Poor publication output and Research activity.

Few students accessing programmes of the Open Campus centre.

Challenging financial situation.

. Poor marketing and communication of

programme offerings. Difficult application process, late or no

notification of results of applications. Inadequate facilities

Major opportunities To capitalize on significant market for

tertiary education especially in the Professions.

Meet the demands for middle managers in Tourist and Banking sectors.

Develop pre-health and pre-engineering programmes

Programmes to assist development in Agriculture

Major opportunities Marketing of postgraduate programmes in

law, medicine, business Increase access to online programmes Workshops and seminars in education,

security, health Build alumni relations

Tertiary institutions providing varying quality of Associate Degrees, Diplomas, Certificate and Degrees in association with US universities

College of The Bahamas offering mainly Bachelor degree programmes, diploma, certificate and vocational programmes. Preparing to move to University status

Teaching and learning-Medical curriculum being actively discussed and altered by all Faculties of Medical Sciences.

Proposals for development of online programme for first 2 years of tourism and hospitality management degree.

Appointment of a Chair at CHTM to lead academic development

CLINICAL PROGRAMMME UPGRADED TO SCHOOL

TEACHING STRENGTHENED WITH APPOINTMENT OF ADDITIONAL ASSISTANT LECTURERS

PROPOSALS FOR STRUCTURED IT AND FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

Medicine Research Unit formed in SCMR. Appointment of clinical epidemiologist. Building of research output through teaching and mentoring staff and graduate

students. Increased participation of undergraduates in

research projects.

CHTM staff participating in research projects.

Collaborative research with COB and Industry.

Grant proposals to be developed

Postgraduate programmes introduced through CHTM and Open Campus.

Continued expansion of programmes in SCMR.
