increase of sealed area: 1 km² / year

10,000 new flats per year are projected

→ increase of surface runoff

→ less infiltration

→ less evaporation,

(locally) higher temperatures

in summer

PROJECT RISA – RAIN INFRASTRUCTURE ADAPTION

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

○ Part of the climate protection plan of the city of

Hamburg

○ Combination and synergies with the introduction of

an impervious area charge („stormwater fee“)

○ Flood protection

○ Water Protection (focus on separate system)

○ Near natural water balance

HAMBURG‘S GREEN ROOF STRATEGY: 100 HECTARES IN 10 YEARS15

Visualisation: TH Treibhaus Landschaftsarchitektur, aerial photograph: Matthias Friedel

SUMMARY & LESSONS LEARNED

Future-proof rainwater management operates in a field of tension between

investors, costs, space requirements and other aspects of urban planning

Cooperation between water utility and stakeholders in urban planning is

crucial for a successful adaption strategy towards blue-green infrastructure

Implementation of water-sensitive urban design is possible in existing

structures, combination with business-as-usual measures as promising

strategy

An uniform adaption strategy, technical fundamentals and experiences /

know-how are the basic elements

Implementation requires personnel capacity and political adaption
