Key Vocabulary
Agriculture – The raising of crops and animals for human use
Bronze Age - a period of time during which metalwork was introduced from around 2500BC--‐
800BC.
Clan - communities that are part of the same tribe.
Flint - a hard grey rock used to form tools
Flaking – A process of shaping stone by chipping pieces off the edges
Glacier – A large sheet of ice
Hand axe- one of the oldest stone tools.
Hillfort - places built on top of hills, used as settlements and defensive spaces.
Hunter-Gatherer – A person who meets their needs by hunting animals and gathering plants
Iron Age - a period of time in which tools were made of iron. Started around 800BC and ended
with the arrival of the Romans.
Neolithic Era – The last period of the Stone Age when humans began to develop agriculture and
use tools and weapons
Paleolithic Era – The earliest part of the Stone Age characterised by tools made of crudely chipped stone and by cave art
Settlement - A group of dwellings (homes) that form a community
Stone Age - a period of time in which people made simple tools, were mostly hunter--‐ gatherers
and began to farm and build settlements.
Tribe - a group of people that share common origins.

ument in Wiltshire, England. It
consists of a ring of standing
stones, with each standing stone
around 13 feet high, 7 feet wide
and weighing around 25 tons.
Skara Brae — Skara Brae is a
stone-built Neolithic settlement,
located on the on the west coast
of the largest of Orkney islands,
Scotland. It consists of 8 clustered
houses. It is Europe’s most com-
plete Neolithic village.
