that he was perhaps some kind of a mildinternationalist. I ventured encouragingly : 'The
frontiers ought to be done away with'.
'I quite agree with you. They ought, indeed.'
There was no mistaking his warmth. He
had a large blunt fleshy nose and a chin which
seemed to have slipped sideways. It was like a
broken concertina. When he spoke, it jerked
crooked in the most curious fashion and a deep
cleft dimple like a wound surprisingly appeared
in the side of it. Above his ripe red cheeks, his
forehead was white like marble. A fringe of dark
grey hair lay across it, compact thick and heavy.
After a moment's examination, I found that he
was wearing a wig.
'Particularly I followed, all these red-tape
formalities, the passport examination, and so
forth.
But no. This wasn't right. I saw at one from
his expression that I'd managed to strike a new
disturbing note. We were speaking similar but
distinct languages. This time however thestranger's reaction was not mistrust. He asked,
with a puzzling air of frankness and curiosity :
'Have you ever had trouble yourself ?'
It wasn't a very odd question, as the tone
in which he asked. I smiled to hide my
mystification. 'Oh, no. Quite the reverse. Often
they don't bother to open anything, and as for
your passport, they don't bother to look at it.'
'I am so glad to hear you say so.' He must
have seen from my face what I was thinking, for
he hastily added : 'Of course. I quite understand.'
I grinned, for by now I had already
concluded that the old boy was engaged in a
little private smuggling. May be a piece of silk
for his wife or a box of cigars for a friend. And
now, he was feeling scared. Certainly he looked
prosperous enough to pay any amount of duty.
The rich have strange pleasures.

Read the following extract carefully and answer the
questions that follow by choosing correct answer :
Modern civilization has some serious
problems and defects. In democratic countries
men are equal before law and have a voice in
deciding how and by whom they shall be
governed. But the sharing of money – which,
means sharing of food and clothing and books
and so on is still very unfair. While some peoplelive in luxury, many do not have even enough to
eat and wear decently. Even in the finest of the
world's cities thousands of people live in
dreadful surroundings, because they are unable
to afford a better life.
A still greater threat comes from war. Twice
already in my life-time, I have witnessed two
great wars : from 1914 to 1918 and 1939 to 1945.
The whole world was torn by war. Moreover,
in the conditions of the present day, a war which
may start anywhere in the world, is likely to
spread everywhere. What is still more tragic is
that man has now discovered how to release for
purposes of war, the colossal forces locked up
in the atom. The leading nations in the world are
making atom bombs, which, if another war takes
place, will certainly be widely used and may lead
to the complete destruction of humanity.
