Your Guide to Experiences @ NUS
UNIVERSITY TOWN
LEE KONG CHIAN NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM
NUS MUSEUM & YONG SIEW TOH CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC
UNIVERSITY CULTURAL CENTRE
CENTRAL LIBRARY FORUM
The NUS University Town (UTown) is the latest and greenest major addition to the NUS Family, strategically integrated with the Kent Ridge Campus via a vehicle and pedestrian bridge. Designed for the entire NUS community, UTown is an educational hub complete with residential spaces, teaching facilities and study clusters, distinguishing the University through excellence in learning and student engagement.
Entering UTown through Internal Shuttle Bus D1 or D2, or walking over College Link, one will first encounter the Town Plaza, a vast conference hosting venue with retail and F&B outlets. One will also find the Town Green further in, where all NUS students can enjoy a moment of relaxation or a quick game of Frisbee. It’s also the backdrop to countless photo shoots and wedding albums, and we welcome you to take a quick break while lazing in the shade.
For those interested in a cup of coffee, the largest 24-hours (during term time) Starbucks is housed in the Education Resource Centre, alongside the Ngee Ann Kongsi Auditorium and a wide range of seminar rooms, Computer Commons, and other learning facilities. Do have a look at the trees located at its centre, a testament to our emphasis on preserving our ecological heritage even as we look to the future.
Definitely worth a look are the NUS Residential Colleges: Cinnamon College (home to the USP), Tembusu College, the College of Alice and Peter Tan (CAPT), and Residential College 4. Also worth noting is the Yale-NUS Campus, an exciting new development in co-operation between NUS and Yale University, formally opening in October 2015.
The Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum is among the most exciting additions to the NUS Family, formally opened in April 2015, and strives to be a leader in Southeast Asian biodiversity and conservation research, education and outreach. Previously known as the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research, it serves to house specimens used for research on the flora and fauna of the region, as physical records of Southeast Asia’s biodiversity.
As the first museum of natural museum in Singapore, it serves as an unparalleled exhibit for the over 500,000 lots of specimens collected from all across the region.
Directly connected to the University Cultural Centre, the NUS Museum is under the purview of the NUS Centre for the Arts, and focuses primarily but not exclusively on Southeast Asian art and culture. It is an integral part of NUS, comprising 7000 artefacts and artworks across 4 collections. We’re not only about the arts of course; from late March, the NUS Museum in collaboration with the Faculty of Science will be hosting a brand-new exhibit, “Building Our Nation through Science & Technology”.
The Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music is the focal point for musical activity, exchange and research for Singapore and the Asia Pacific region. You may also wish to have a look at the online schedule for special events; students of the Conservatories hold lunchtime concerts open to the public, while leading international visiting artistes conduct performances you definitely don’t want to miss.
Open since 2000, the University Cultural Centre (UCC) serves as the beating heart of the University cultural district, offering a magnificent stage for the performing arts. Reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Singapore and the very best in international art and entertainment, the UCC plays host to events such as concerts and theatre performance, as part of NUS’s investment in supporting the cultural enrichment of students and Singapore as a whole.
Come end-July, it also serves as the backdrop for the annual Commencement ceremony, where graduating NUS students receive their degrees and celebrate the completion of the first stage of their higher education.
The NUS Library System comprises seven distinct libraries spread all across the University, of which the NUS Central Library (as its name might suggest) is the centerpiece. Serving Engineering, FASS and Computing students, the NUS Central Library consists of 5 floors, including the Singapore-Malaysia collection, and holds a substantial proportion of the 1.2 million titles available to students of the University. Do note that the library facilities proper are not open to the Public.
The Central Forum, located directly below the Central Library, is a vast social area suitable for interaction and studying; if you’re lucky, you may run across one of the many events or bazaars often held by different student bodies. Don’t miss the NUS Co-Op, where you can pick up Linus (the University Mascot), or purview the range of textbooks and materials currently being used by our undergraduates.

STEPHEN RIADY CENTRE & EDUCATION RESOURCE CENTRE The Stephen Riady Centre (SRC) offers an array of facilities and amenities for our students and is an excellent point for visitors to get their bearings. The Visitors Centre at SRC Level 1, co-located with the Office of Admissions, is a major point of interest for prospective students to learn more about our undergraduate programmes. SRC is also the centre for sport activities in University Town, housing indoor sports courts, dance studios, gym facilities and an infinity pool, alongside a multi-story rock climbing wall right outside the Visitors Centre.
If you’re feeling hungry, SRC is host to a wide variety of dining outlets including a food court. On the other hand, if you’re looking to pick up a souvenir from your visit, head over to Bookhaven, the University Town bookstore with a varied range of books, IT material and NUS memorabilia. Open 24/7 during term time, the Education Resource Centre (ERC) is located at the heart of University Town and hosts a wide range of IT facilities and study locations for our students to work individually or in groups. ERC has well-equipped tutorial and study rooms while the Ngee Ann Kongsi Auditorium is a popular venue for lectures and seminars.
