Introduction
It has been wonderful to see you develop new skills and confidence over the past years.
You are now entering the last few months at Oasis Academy Brightstowe and should be
starting your preparations for the GCSE examinations in May. The mock exams will have
provided you with feedback on the areas of strength and highlighted areas that you will
need to work on. If you are going to get the most from your exam preparations, I have five
key pieces of advice:
1. Do not panic – everyone gets stressed, don’t let it control you! (see page 7)
2. Start Early – The earlier you start your revision the less stressful you’ll find it and the
more success you’ll have
3. Time – If you want good grades, you will need to put in the hours (2 or more hours a
day). Put your social life on the ‘back burner’!
4. Move away from your phone – turn it off and leave it in another room when your
revising and avoid distractions
5. Study alone – studying with friends has been shown not to be effective
This guide is to support your planning and revision. The next few months are crucial for you
and your success. Whatever your aspirations are for the future, my hope is that as you
move to the next stage of your life that you succeed and thrive. In order to achieve this
please take advantage of the support and guidance within this booklet and the Academy
staff.

Principal Oasis Academy Brightstowe

How to revise
Just reading your textbook is not enough! This is not a good way of learning information.
There are 3 key elements to effective revision: creating something (flashcards, mind map,
making a recording); memorising the facts and then applying what you have learned to
exam questions. We call each of these steps ‘prepare it’, ‘know it’ and ‘apply it’. The way
you would use these when revising is shown below.
Step 1 - Prepare it! Identify the key facts from the text and create a mind map that includes
each of these.
4
Step 2 - Know it! Draw mind maps and try out the revision techniques listed on page 5 and
6. For example, use black pen/red pen technique so you can memorise the facts from the
mind maps that you create.
Step 3 - Apply it! Past paper, questions are available in family time, set as homework and
from your class teacher. DO THIS FROM MEMORY do not copy from your notes – it is
important for you to find out what you can remember!
The most important part of this stage is to assess and evaluate your responses using a mark
scheme and correct your responses using a red pen.
MARK YOUR WORK! This will show you if you have been
able to learn how to apply what you have learnt. If there
are gaps in what you can remember go back to the mind
map and spend time revising the key facts again!
5
Revision technique 1: Flash cards
These are cards with the most IMPORTANT information on – be selective and don’t write
everything from your notes onto these!
The flash cards should be
Colourful
Two- Sided- Key word/topic on one side and information on the other
6
Revision technique 2: Black pen vs red pen
7
Support with your revision
It is really important that you remember there is support for you
throughout the revision process – you are not alone.
If you are finding the preparation for the GCSE’s a real challenge
and you are feeling worried or overwhelmed support is available to
you in the following places:
Speak to your Tutor, Assistant Head of Year or your Head of Year
Talk to your parent or carer – sometimes explaining how we feel can really help

Above all, you must remember that we care about you and are here
to support you!
