Alias model and 1:4 scale model

In the design brief, directly given by Porsche, we were asked to show our vision for the future of 911, the most iconic car of the company.After some months of development Mitja Borkert, Porsche exterior design director, selected this concept out of 5 proposals to produce a 1:4 scale model.The project was developed with my team mates Gianmarco Giacchina, Khashayar Jenabi and Dario Lauriola, but I only show in my portfolio my sketches and renders.I also personally made the Alias digital model used to mill the physical one.

911 SOLO

Our only real inspiration through the project was the Porsche racing tradition: we didn’t now what we were exactly expecting from a future Porsche, but we were sure that we expected it to be a real sports-car.For this reason we chose to develop a really extreme sport-car and to submit to Porsche the maximum provocation: the single seater 911, aiming to create a new, unique relationship between the driver and his Porsche.

Looking trough Porsche history, one special model caught our attention more than all the others. Although his old style, the purism of Porsche 935 Moby dick

hides a unique concept: there is a Porsche inside a Porsche. Getting a big influence from the Mobydick, the whole design process was

inspired by this uncommon idea: Porsche 911 Solo is in some ways a tribute to this unique car.

2. THE 935 MOBYDICK: A PORSCHE INSIDE A PORSCHE

The idea is to put driver and engine in the center of the car, creating its beating heart.Arund it, a composition of smooth surfaces and technical parts: a hymn to the Porsche purism.

THE SINGLE SEATER 911

Inspired by Moby Dick, we tried to use the same concept developing 911 Solo as acomposition of two elements: the glossy capsule, enclosing engine, driver and mechanical components, and the external body, with aesthetic and aerodynamic functions.

DESIGN RESEARCH: CAPSULE + BODY

Designing a single seater car gave us the possibility to emphasize some of the most attractive features of the 911 DNA: the front fenders and the back shoulders. The single seater cockpit totally changed the vehicle architecture, resulting in an extremely new top view, recalling in some ways the pattern used in some models of the 935 family.

The front of the car is developed around a new conception of intakes and headlamps. Trying to recall some of the iconic shapes of the 911 design DNA, we designed two unique holes

hiding lights and intakes, giving a new mysterious feeling to the front end.We also started to work on an unusual front spoiler, moving through the whole car volume.

The back was for sure the part of the car which had the most direct influence from Moby Dick: trying different solutions in terms of shape, volume and deepness, we chose to show a part of the glossy capsule through an open part of the body. We also kept the same 935 squarish feeling, designing big shoulders to make the car look wide and aggressive.

Keeping in mind the purism that drove us during the project, we also brought some evolu-tions to the front language, making it as aligned as possible to the 935 mobydick DNA.The front end brakes in some ways some of the rules of nowadays Porsche design language, bringing it to a more advanced stage.

Designing the side view, the main point of interest was to show power and wildness, toghether with balance and dynamism.The final design clearly recalls some of the key elements of the early sketches, wich are now developed in a very armonic way: the integrated wheels took the place of the “wings” charachterising the first drawings, the front spoiler is now better integrated in the body of the car. The silhouette is an evolution of the tradidional 911 roofline.

FINAL DESIGNThe final design is a sophisticated synthesis of rough Mobydick purism and iconic Porsche balance.Combining smooth surfaces with technically shaped elements was the theme driving the stylistic developement of the car.

FINAL DESIGN SKETCHESBlending the glossy capsule and the coachwork, we created a dynamic flow moving across the whole car.Front and back end are a recognisable expression of the wild soul of the 935 Mobydick.

Especially in the front view we really tried to create a new design language for Porsche.Leaving the iconic round light, we gave a new interpretation of the 4 lights headlamps that Porsche is lately using.The car shows some very technical components, such as the two vertical spoilers suppor-ting the headlamps, but thanks to the embracing shape of the front it’s still really emotional.

DESIGN LANGUAGE EVOLUTION

In the final design, we added some aerodynamic and aesthetic elements, such as the big extractor under the capsule. We also conceived a flap behind the back wheel, with the purpose of improving the braking system of the car. These carefully designed components create a unique, strong frame that gives to the back a really aggressive but harmonious look.

I personally developed the alias model used to mill the physical 1:4 scale model. Having a direct 3D feedback of what we were doing gave us a big support during the last steps of the design process, giving us a better 3D understanding of the car. The model was a real help in the stylistic evolution of the car, evolving with the photoshop renders till the final design.

ALIAS MODELING

The hardest part of the modeling process was finding the way to have a continuous reflec-tion from the body to the wheel surfaces, in particular in the connection from the door panel.The final alias file was used to mill the physical model that finally gave a real shape to our Porsche 911 Solo concept.

Luminescence is a three seaters electric vehicle.

Designers are still facing to some troubles developing an electric vehicle.When we take a look to the EVs that we have on the roads nowadays, we see that while some cars are just adapting the traditional architecture to the electric pow-ertrain requirements, some others are totally distorting it, hardly matching with the expectations that people have in terms of aesthetics.

The purpose of Luminescence is to imagine how the developement of an electric car can in few years find a good compromise between electric look and appeal, reshap-ing the Infiniti design language.

Can an EV be attractive for people? Playing with glossy shapes and uncoventional forms, I try to create a new balance between electric look and aesthetic appeal. Luminescence wants to have a smooth appearence, but a lively, sporty soul.

Even being a small EV, the aggressive face of Luminescence shows the sporty vocation of the car. The three seaters disposition put the driver in a

central position, creating an exciting driving experience.

Front grill, surface treatment, wavy C pillar.These are some of the Infiniti design language elements that I got inspired from. I tried to renew all of them, giving a new, unconventional look to the car, without loosing the special appearence and the DNA of the brand.

Developing a small EV also made me think about how to use spaces in a more suitable way. The absence of a thermal engine in the front allowed me to redesign the silhouette of the car and to use a driver oriented three seaters disposition. The battery pack is under the seats to save space, the electric motor in the back leave enough space for the luggage compartment of a city car.The solar panel in the roof helps the motor to produce the energy that the car needs.

Even following some elements of the Infiniti design language, the back has a very unconven-tional volume. The covered wheel helps the aerodynamics, while the lights shape remind the typical Infiniti C pillar. Infiniti Luminescence: electric powertrain, compact size, sporty soul, unconventional style.

UNCONVENTIONAL STYLE

When we read the name Bugatti, we immediately think about a luxury hyper car. Is it possible for this company to put its DNA in an SUV?With this compact SUV based on Porsche Macan package, I try to imagine how Bugatti could use his history and tradition in this unexplored segment, expanding its range of models.

Creating a new segment for Bugatti, I first of all felt the need to study the history of this com-pany to find some design language recurring elements. Especially the Type 57, made in the thirty’s, was a good inspiration during the project: long bonnet evolving from the cockpit, emphasized front fenders, sinuous back volume, crest line and flowing silhouette were absolute reference points for my design.

The design language is developed in a new and modern way, using different materials and colors to create an emotional composition of shapes.

INSPIRATION AND RESEARCH

Few strong elements characterize the back: the partially covered wheel, already used by Bugatti in many old models, the layered structure. The purpose of the sketching phase was to find the way to give a powerful and protective feeling, not loosing the harmony that any Bugatti needs.

Back view is the strongest part of the car, showing its power in a very exclusive way. I used a new approach to emphasize the iconic double color, achieving an emotional style and creating interesting details.

The main purpose of the research for the front part was to find the way to recall in a compact SUV the iconic flow of shapes between bonnet and front fenders. Being impossible to create separate volumes in the package of a real car, I chose to show it in a new way, with a se-quence of lines, empty spaces and materials. The front fender cut-line is a very simple element, but it also helps to recall the Bugatti DNA, completing the design of the car.

Lines and aesthetic elements are harmoniously connected from the back to the front, through the side view.Flowing silhouette, covered wheel and colors alternation immediately distinguish the car as a real Bugatti, even in an unconventional package.
