“Fraud Alert” Coronavirus Related Scams Fraudsters are exploiting the spread of COVID-19 coronavirus to facilitate various types of fraud and cyber-crime.

Since February 2020, the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) has identified 21 types of reported fraud where Coronavirus was mentioned, with victim losses totalling over £800k. This includes victims attempting to purchase protective face masks from fraudulent sellers. Reported numbers are expected to rise as the virus continues to spread.

Fraudsters are also sending out coronavirus-themed phishing emails in an attempt to trick people into opening malicious attachments or revealing sensitive personal and financial details.

Some of the tactics identified include fraudsters purporting to be from research organisations affiliated with the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO). The link in the email leads to a malicious website, or one is asked to make a payment by disclosing personal account details.

N.B. These organisations will never email attachments or links or ask you to donate directly to emergency response plans or funding appeals.

PLEASE NOTE It’s very important to report crimes as otherwise rural communities may not be given the required level of resourcing they deserve.

Summer is coming and we all enjoy the brief time we can spend outdoors. If you are having a bonfire, please be considerate of your neighbours so they don’t have to close windows and retreat inside, especially at this time when it could make symptoms worse for those with respiratory problems.

Orston Walkers

Unfortunately we have had to cancel our regular Tuesday walks for now. However, it’s good to see

so many walkers taking a local walk as their daily exercise, even if we

can only wave in passing.

We will resume our walk schedule as soon as government advice

allows, so I would be very happy to receive details of any new walks members find in the meantime

Best wishes to all - keep safe

and healthy.

Please contact Pauline on 07811 001197 or paulinefaz@live.com

for further details.

We have been following Corona government guidelines and it was therefore essential to cancel our March and April meetings. It may also be necessary to cancel our May meeting, which is the last one in our Orston Garden Club programme for this year. Please keep an eye on local community poster sites, Facebook and websites for updates on our May meeting. Until we meet again, stay well and safe.

Orston Garden Club

VE Day CANCELLED

8th - 10th May 2020 Unfortunately, we have had to cancel the VE Day celebrations. We will still be building the memorial and the opening of this will be organised in due course, when conditions allow.

Well we weren’t expecting this last month!! Only a couple of weeks ago the community was busy, planning the VE Day weekend, the choir were practicing for forthcoming events, gardeners planting seeds for the produce show, dance class learning maypole techniques, soapbox racers busy building death traps, just to mention a few of our many village activities. Then ” BOOM “ we are all grounded.

But being grounded in Orston is not like being grounded in most places, within hours an action plan was in place, meetings held face to face and via WhatsApp, messages, emails and many phone calls, we put a call out for volunteers to help and check up on our vulnerable and elderly residents, over 80 volunteers came forward on the first ask ! Phenomenal and we thank each and every one of you.

The village has been divided into six zones, all with its own WhatsApp group and coordinator, people in each zone identified the vulnerable and continue to make sure they have everything they need, and are kept as safe as possible. Although we obviously can’t set a date, but when this nightmare is over Orston is going to have a party of all parties. We have all shown how much love and care is in our community so we can be certain is going to be a good one.

So, let’s have a bit of fun while grounded !!! We are going to have a few little competitions…... 1. We want you to make the best creation you can out of used toilet roll centres, this could be anything from drawing a face on one to building a castle out of many. It’s up to you! Get creative and even get dad involved!!! These are to be placed on the table under the notice board on the Green over the 3rd and 4th of April. Remember to go on your own and don’t approach the table if anyone else is there. 2. A little local quiz for you to try, answers will be posted on the village web site on the 4th April.

1. Name all the streets in Orston. 2. What famous person had false teeth made from Orston gypsum? 3. The Smite joins which other river before it joins the Trent? 4. Who were the well-known millers based in Orston? 5. How many bells hang in the church? 6. What make of tractors are green with yellow wheels? 7. How many people live in Orston?

8. Name the last five head teachers of Orston School. 9. What year did the Orston Christmas Pageant start? 10 Name all the train stations between Grantham and Nottingham.

Once again, we thank you all for all your help during this difficult and frightening time but we all know there is a great community ready and willing to help you in any way.

Parish Council News

With sadness, the Parish Council has accepted the resignation of Michele Sharratt as Clerk to the Council. Michele held the position for seven years, and carried out the role with distinction, handling the complexities of local government with aplomb. Both the Council and the community will miss her, and we thank her for all she has done since 2013. Pauline Ryan is taking on the role, and is working with Nick Hammond and Michele to effect a smooth transition. The email remains the same for any enquiries: orstonparishcouncil@outlook.com

Don’t forget to sanitise your dustbins after they have been collected as the dustbin men move over 2,000 bins a day and some could become contaminated with Coronavirus.

A massive thank you to everyone who participated in making the Retox Karaoke night a success! Singers queued up from 4-9pm and sang their hearts out with gusto. Thank you to the Millennium Green Trustees and all our friends who helped organise and run the evening. And thank you to our sponsors- Margo And Plum and Gordon Road Dental Practice who provided raffle prizes. We raised £290 towards the upkeep of the Millennium Green. Thank you also to Peter Reid for donating £100 towards the essential tree work that is being carried out on the Millennium Green.
