KEY

What is a Fraction?

A fraction is a number that shows part of a whole. In this fraction, “X” represents the

NUMERATOR, while “Y” represents the DENOMINATOR.

KEY

Adding and Subtracting FractionsWhen adding or

subtracting fractions, they must have a common denominator. In order to do this, you must find a number that both of the denominators in the problem can multiply to. When you find a number, you have to multiply the numerator by the same number you used to get the common denominator. Once you have found a common denominator, the problem should look something like this.

KEY

HINT

EACH OF THE FRACTIONS WILL BE MULTIPLIED BY A DIFFERENT NUMBER TO REACH A

COMMON DENOMINATOR

KEY

Multiplying Fractions

When multiplying fractions, multiply the first numerator by the second numerator. Do this with the denominators as well!

KEY

HINTMultiply across the top and then multiply

across the bottom.

Don’t forget to simplify your answer!

KEY

Dividing FractionsDividing is a little different. When dividing, be sure to

change any mixed number into an improper fraction. This will make it easier to divide. Take the second fraction and switch the numerator and the denominator (Flip the top number and the bottom number). Now you must multiply these fractions and simplify to get your final answer.

KEY

Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions

Depending on how the question wants your answer to look like, your answer may be left improper or it may need to be changed into a mixed number.
