For many people spring evokes the need to air
out your rooms, super-clean everything from
carpet to ceiling and start fresh! But the best
spring cleaning may include more than just a
thorough mopping and throwing open the win-
dows. Think of spring as the time to re-
evaluate and organize your health, well-being
and safety needs as well as your wants and
dreams.
Organize Your Health, Well-Being and Safety:
Check-in with your health goals. Do a
health check in with your doctor, nurses,
caregivers or family members. If it has
been a while since you’ve gotten a physi-
cal or reevaluated your health goals, now
is a great time to do so! Schedule an ap-
pointment with your physician today!
Locate & organize important health docu-
ments. Is the monthly bill paying process
too burdensome? Visit your bank and
ask to be set up with automatic bill pay.
Do your children/personal representa-
tives have access to your financial hold-
ings should there be an emergency?
Where did your passport ‘run off’ to, and
does it need to be renewed for the big
trip still in your future?
Tidy Up Your Wants & Dreams:
Check-in with your life goals. Spring is a great
time to take stock of where you are in the jour-
ney of life. It is never too late to plan and
dream. What have you always wanted to do?
Make plans now! Include a budget, steps to
success and a timeline to complete your pro-
ject. Then get out and grab your dream!
Happy Spring (Cleaning) Everyone!
Spring Cleaning - Beyond Cobwebs and Dusting

The earliest cave dwellers likely spent many nights looking up at the sky and pondering the stars, the planets, and questioning how hu-mans fit in the universe. Those feelings of wonder and awe have not changed much. April is Global Astronomy Month, and oppor-tunities abound to look heavenward and ap-preciate the vast beauty of the night sky.
The organization Astronomers Without Bor-ders encourages stargazers across the globe to join their “Global Star Party” on April 16. Watch the sunset and BYOT (Bring Your Own Telescope), but viewing devices aren’t neces-sary for spying stars, the moon, the Milky Way, or even planets like Mercury, which will be es-pecially visible in mid-April. The group’s phi-losophy is “One People, One Sky,” and they believe that the action of stargazing reminds us that we are all together on planet Earth, adrift in the universe.
The best viewing spots are the dark places, far from city lights. April 4–10 celebrates Interna-
tional Dark Sky Week and raises awareness of light pollution. We’ve heard of air pollution, but are skies really polluted by artificial light? The International Dark Sky Associa-tion values stargazing so much that they fight to reduce artificial light so that all may enjoy star-filled skies. Some towns have even been certified “Dark Sky Communities,” making them some of the best lo-cales for stargazing in the world. These communities include Beverly Shores, Indiana; Flagstaff, Arizona; and Bon Accord, Alberta, Canada.
Step outside tonight, orient yourself due north and find the Big Dipper. The dipper looks like a square pot with a long handle pointing to-wards the horizon and is part of the Ursa Ma-jor constellation. Using the top two stars at the edge of the Big Dipper, draw a straight line out and you will find Polaris, the North Star. The North Star is the handle of the Little Dip-per. Once you have a visual of the big and little dippers, Draco, the dragon, is easy to make out. The tail of the dragon winds between the dippers, forming a u-shape, and its head is be-low the bowl of the Little Dipper.
If nighttime stargazing isn’t your passion, April offers other chances for simply looking sky-ward. April 14 is Look Up at the Sky Day, and the week of April 24–30 is Sky Awareness Week. Clouds, the sun, a bird, a plane—heck, you might even spy Superman. The heavens have always been a magical place, and you never know what might appear out of thin air unless you look.

-Mark Twain
On April 9, 1882, renowned showman P.T. Barnum arrived in New York City with the largest spectacle ever to grace his traveling circus. Jumbo the African elephant, weighing 6.5 tons and standing over 11 feet tall, stepped from the British steamship H.M.S. Assyrian Monarch. The massive beast, as gentle and clumsy as a child, instantly en-deared himself to audiences. Thanks to Jum-bo’s many stunts, such as promenading across the Brooklyn Bridge, Barnum’s circus earned the nickname “The Greatest Show on Earth.”
The name Jumbo was a cross between two Swahili words, jumbe meaning “chief,” and jambo meaning “hello.” We can thank Jumbo the elephant for adding the word jumbo to our vocabulary.

Famous
Birthdays
April’s birthstone is
the Diamond, a fitting
gem to symbolize the
start of something
new just like spring-
time. The word dia-
mond is derived from
the Greek word
“adamas” meaning
invincible, which is an
appropriate way to
describe those born
in April. April babies
are more likely to dis-
play leadership, have
an assertive nature,
and be extroverted.
