What is Clean Cities?
Clean Cities is a voluntary federal
program designed to accelerate and
expand the use of alternative fuel vehicles
(AFVs) and related technologies in
communities throughout the country and
to provide refueling and maintenance
facilities for their operation.

The Transportation Oil GapUnited States Petroleum Production and Consumption,
1970–2025
Transportation’s Role in U.S. Oil Use
• The U.S. now pays more
than $2 billion per week
for imported crude oil and
petroleum products (Energy Information Administration).
• Transportation accounts for 65% of U.S. oil consumption
(Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Network).
• Petroleum supplies about 97 percent of the energy used in transportation
(DOE Energy Information Administration).
• Each day, an estimated 21.5 million miles are driven in Charlotte-Mecklenburg -- a 34 percent jump since 1990. (Charlotte Observer)
•Vehicle emissions are the leading source of U.S. air pollution today.
(Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Network).

On April 15, Mecklenburg and 7 surrounding counties were named as “non-attainment” areas for ozone.
The deadline for reducing ozone to meet the standard is 2010.
What can we do to help reduce our dependence on petroleum…..
….And to help clear the air?
