Page Two Dear Parishioners, “You don’t need to say thee and thou, wouldst and couldst when praying. Just talk with God.” So said my sixth grade teacher, Sr. Mary Winton, whenever she taught us about prayer. Prayer is a conversation with God, much like Abraham’s conversation with God in the first reading. Too often we talk to God, we hog our time with Him by doing all the talking, and seldom letting Him get in a word.
Find time to look at Abraham’s example of prayer, of conversation with God in today’s first reading from Genesis 18: 20-32. Look at how Abraham talks but allows God a chance to respond. God enjoys the times we come to Him in prayer. All He asks is that we Him a chance to speak. In the Word,
“One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the
mouth of the Lord.” (Deuteronomy 8:3)
BIBLICAL INSTITUTE OF THE DIOCESE OF JOLIET

ST. PHILIP THE APOSTLE ADULT FAITH FORMATION BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP
Many Catholics feel catechized but not “evangelized,” meaning they know about Jesus but do not feel they know him personally. The bridge between where we are and where we want to be in our faith journey can be confusing without the
right guidance. In Under the Influence of Jesus, best-selling author Joe Paprocki explains complex spiritual concepts with engaging discussion so that “everyday” Catholics can integrate and articulate their faith and live the Gospel in a way that is simple, compelling, contemporary, liberating, and life-changing. Cost of the book is $15.95, and they will be distributed at the introductory session on September 13. The remaining sessions will be held on October 11, November 8, December 13, January 10, and March 14 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in Room 1. The complete registration form is available at st-phil.org and in the literature rack in the narthex. Registrations are due by August 7.

KEEP PRAYING! St. Monica, whose feast we celebrate in August, is often known as “the persistent mother.” She watched her oldest son, Augustine, turn his back on his Christian faith. Monica was exasperated. For years she gave up talking directly to her son on the advice of a local bishop, who told her that it was better to talk to God about Augustine then to Augustine about God. The mother never gave up praying for her son. Eventually Augustine gave up his wild ways, was baptized, and later ordained and named bishop of Hippo. St. Augustine went on to become one of the Church’s greatest scholars. Today’s readings address the importance of persistent prayer. Abraham, in spite of trepidation that he is bothering the Lord, continues to ask about the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah. Jesus, in Luke’s Gospel, tells his disciples to “ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Luke 11:9). This is our charge: keep praying.

Marriage Information: Please call the rectory to make arrangements at least six months in advance of the wedding date. We ask parents to teach us how to tie our shoes, how to ride a bike, how to drive a car, how to open a bank account, how to interview for a job. Life skills once learned are mastered. How often do we ask parents, teachers, ministers how to pray? Prayer skill is the life skill that is never mastered—we are always learning how to pray more boldly, persistently and authentically. When Jesus’ disciples asked him to teach them how to pray, did they really know what they were asking? Jesus taught them
not simply words, but an orientation of heart; in prayer how they are to relate to God and each other, to be persistent, to ask for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Then, no request would be too great, no seeking would be unrewarded, no door would be locked. Jesus in this gospel gives us words for prayer, orientation of heart for prayer, models for persistence in prayer. Every prayer is answered by God, but according to God’s will and orientation of the divine heart. Our prayer does not change God; it changes us. As we surrender to our prayer, we become more like our Teacher, Jesus, who prays boldly, persistently, and authentically. We never master prayer; we let the prayer of Jesus master us.

472 envelopes were used for an envelope total of $11,329. Loose offertory totaled $790. May God bless you for your generosity.

“It is he whom we proclaim, admonishing everyone and teaching
everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.”
One definition of admonish is to tell or urge someone to do something. I believe that this is what Paul is telling us to do in the last sentence of our second reading today. When we urge others to live in the ways of Christ, we bring them into relationship with him. In our lives we show our faith, not only by the words we speak, but also through our actions, the way we treat others, and the example of tolerance we demonstrate in stressful situations. When we act out of love, the message of the Gospel shines through and, without a word spoken, we evangelize. This evangelization brings to light the salvation Jesus promises for those who he calls. Our sessions for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults will begin in late September. If you or someone you know is seeking a full relationship with Christ and our faith community, please contact me for further information. On Thursday August 4, a new series of Grief Support sessions will begin in Room 1. The evening will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will offer an opportunity for those who have lost a loved one to confidentially talk about what they are experiencing as well as learning about the stages of grief. Please contact me for more information about this support group.

What questions do you have about the Catholic faith? Please send your questions to Carol Schubert by calling 630-628-0900 x104 or e-mailing cschubert@st-phil.org. What is hell? Our faith calls “hell” the condition of final separation from God. Anyone who sees love clearly in the face of God and, nevertheless, does not want it decides freely to have this condition instead. [1033-1036] Jesus, who knows what hell is like, speaks about it as the “outer darkness” (Mt 8:12). Expressed in our terms, it is cold rather than hot. It is horrible to
contemplate a condition of complete rigidity and hopeless isolation from everything that could bring aid, relief, joy, and consolation into one’s life What are angels? Angels are pure spiritual creatures of God who have understanding and will. They have no bodies, cannot die, and are usually not visible. They live constantly in God’s presence and convey God’s will and God’s protection to men. [328-333, 350-351] An angel, wrote Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, is “so to speak the personal thought with which God is turned toward me.” At the same time, the angels are turned completely toward their Creator. They burn with love for him and serve him day and night. Their song of praise is never ending. In Sacred Scripture the angels who have fallen away from God are called devils or demons.
