Alums Coordinate Reunion
in this issue >>>
Golfing & Evening of Fellowship Held Sept. 23rd
When friends start talking, things come to life. That’s what happened late this summer when Stefanie Wusterbarth Brown, 1987 and Andy Raih, 1984, got together and decided to organize an all school reunion for September 23rd. The day was planned to coincide with the annual James Dean Festival in hopes that Bennett /St. Paul alumni may be in town.
The day started with a golf scramble held at the Elks Country Club in Marion. Golfers battled the heat to claim victory on the day.
The evening gathering was held at the Plymouth Club in Marion. New owners (and alums), Derek Brown, 1992, and Stefanie Wusterbarth Brown provided a band for the evening. Donated items were raffled off with the proceeds being donated to St. Paul Catholic School. It was an evening filled with the sharing of stories, catching up with one another and the discussion of plans for future events.
Thank you to everyone who had a hand in making the reunion happen and to those who attended. It was a day and evening full of friends, old and new, and the sharing of pride in a common foundation.

A Message from
Father
Weisenberger
November 1 is the Solemnity of All
Saints. On this day we remember
countless holy men and women who
have gone before us into the glory of
eternal life. Usually when we hear the
word “saint” we think of people whom
the Church has canonized. However,
November 1 reminds us that there are
numerous saints whom the Church has
not canonized, for example, our family
members who showed us how to live
holy lives. This day also reminds us
that being holy, being a saint, is the
basic calling, vocation of every one of
us. People will sometimes say, “I am
no saint.” I typically respond by saying
that I hope he/she is. Ultimately we
are either saints and with God for all
eternity or in hell. Being a saint is
what God wants for everyone. Of
course when someone says, “I am no
saint” that person means that he/she
is not perfect. None of the saints
were perfect either. We are not called
to perfection but to holiness. This
newsletter contains a great deal of
information about the academic
opportunities available to our students
and I am very happy that we are an
excellent school in terms of academics.
For me, however, it is even more
important that we are able to help
our students to grow in holiness, to
become saints.
Indiana School Scholarship Tax Credit Program Benefits
Students & Donors
The words ‘school choice’ can mean many things. To many parents in Indiana they mean the ability to enroll their children in the school that best fits their individual child, whether that is a public, charter, private or home school. Over the course of time, more families are taking ownership of their children’s education and exploring the options available to them. The school choice programs in Indiana help to make the choice of private school affordable for everyone.
In 2010, Indiana launched a tax credit program to help low-and middle-income families access the right school for their children’s needs. Indiana’s Tax Credit Scholarship Program provides tuition assistance to qualifying students at non-public schools. The funds are provided from state approved non-profits known as SGOs or Scholarship Granting Organizations. An SGO is a state-designated 501(c)(3) that accepts donations from individuals and/or corporations that are used to award scholarships to Indiana children. It is important to understand that SGOs provide a large opportunity for not only schools like St. Paul, but also any individual or corporation who donates to it. In addition to existing federal deductions, individual or corporate donors may receive a 50 percent Indiana state tax credit for their donation. There is no limit to how much a donor may give; however, there is a limit to the tax credits available in a fiscal year. During this fiscal year, which began July 1, 2017, there is $12.5 million available in tax credits. As of October 5, 2017, nearly $5.5 million in credits have already been awarded.
St. Paul partners with the Institute for Quality Education (IQE) as our official SGO. By donating to IQE and designating your donation to St. Paul Catholic School, you will help to provide needs-based scholarships to eligible St.
Paul students. Here’s a closer look at how it works.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith make a $1,000 donation to IQE designating St. Paul to receive their gift. This gift is then used to award scholarships to students who meet eligibility requirements to attend St. Paul. The tax credit for Mr. and Mrs. Smith is illustrated below.
Donation Amount $1,000
Indiana State Tax Credit $ 500
(50% of the donation amount)
Federal Tax Deduction* $ 300
(This assumes a 30% tax bracket for Mr. and Mrs. Smith.)
Estimated Tax Savings for Mr. & Mrs. Smith $ 800
Estimated After-Tax Savings Cost of Donation $ 200
*Please consult with your tax advisor for your specific situation. This is for illustration purposes only. Your gift to an SGO is tax deductible to the full extent of the federal charitable tax laws.
How can you help children attend St. Paul Catholic School through an Indiana Tax Credit Scholarship? Here’s how:
Make a gift by cash or check by downloading and completing a donation form from www.stpaulcatholicmarion.org/sgo-giving. Mail it with your gift to the address listed.
Make a gift by credit card by visiting https://sgo.i4qed.org/donate.
Make a gift of stock by visiting the site above or contacting Karen Browder, St. Paul Business Manager, at 765-664-6345.
Indiana’s School Choice Programs provide families the opportunity to choose a school environment that is best for their child. Now you have the opportunity to help a child who has made their choice St. Paul.
The number of
non-Catholic
students at
St. Paul is
increasing.
A Message from
Principal Cindy
Mauman
My grandma always said to me, ‘As you
get older time goes by faster’. It is so
true. Here we are at the end of the first
quarter of this school year. Where did
the 90 days go? Students and teachers
return anxious for a new year and
refreshed by their summer break. Now
they are anxious for fall break. After
much too much testing, getting back
into the school routine and tackling a
grade level harder in their school work,
it is time for a few days to slow down
and again refresh. I found a prayer about
Autumn Days which says, ‘… there is a
time for everything: there is a time for
dying and a time for rising. We need
courage to enter into the transformation
process.’ I think change is difficult for
most of us. For children who enter
school in August, they must adapt to a
new teacher, perhaps new students in
their room and increased expectations
as they enter a new grade level. Teachers
must adapt to a whole new group of
personalities and the needs of their
new students and parents. The final lines
of the prayer say, ‘May we allow our
experience of autumn to speak to us of
necessary change and growth. Grant us
an openness to the continuous process
of letting go and moving on that is a
part of the human condition. We are
grateful that you are our faithful
companion on this journey.’ I wish you
a joyful transformation as you accept
change and growth in your life this
autumn.

In 1 John 3:16-18, we are called to love with action. Students and staff wanted to do just that to aid those in areas affected by the recent hurricanes. Led by the Student Ambassadors, the St. Paul joined forces with other Catholic schools across the United States to help by raising funds. Students and staff were encouraged to find ways to earn at least $1.00 to donate. The money raised was sent to the National Catholic Educational Association as part of their Student to Student relief drive. This drive was designed to help rebuild, re-open and re-enroll students in Catholic schools in the affected areas. Students and staff raised $233, which is 1.5 times the amount of their goal!
St. Paul Hosts Camp Invention This summer during the week of June 9th St. Paul offered Camp Invention, a STEM based camp. During this week children in grades K-5 were immersed in hands on projects that challenged and encouraged them to be creative thinkers and problem solvers. Projects were divided into four modules that promoted
teamwork, innovation, entrepreneurship and a program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
Camp Invention provided all the materials and lessons for the week. The modules were taught by four St. Paul teachers, Sherri Strickland, Amie Mooney, Robin Beardsley, and Michelle Khalouf. Two high school student counselor interns, Jessica and Olivia Mooney, led the campers through all daily activities. Middle school Counselors in Training, Jaden Sebastian and Elliot Fongers, assisted the instructors, interns, and campers. We also had parent volunteers that helped all around, Mrs. Bunker, Mrs. Hutchinson, and Miss Cravens. We would not have been
as successful without all of the people who pitched in to help.
The feedback from parents, students and teachers was extremely positive so we will be having Camp Invention here at St. Paul Catholic School in June 2018! Thanks to all those that participated and helped make this a successful camp for our children.
