THE CROSS OF JESUS The perception of a cross changed dramatically
after Jesus’ crucifixion. Before that event, death on a cross
was not only horrible, it was degrading. It was a penalty
reserved only for the most wretched of criminals. The
word “glory” would not have found its way into the same
sentence containing the word “cross.” But all that changed
with Jesus. Over time, believers began to venerate and
honor the cross. They painted, sculpted, and carved images
of it. Many lost their own lives for their association with it.
Today our reverence for and relationship with the cross
recalls little of the contempt originally associated with it.
As it has been through the ages, it is our perception of the
cross that determines how we follow Jesus.© Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

Hello everyone,
From the bottom of my heart I give thanks to God

past two and half months during my stay here at St.
Patrick’s. I will always remember you especially be-
cause it was my very first experience living in a par-
ish. Please keep me in your prayers as well as the rest
of my brother seminarians in our diocese. In case you
ever want to come up and visit or write me a letter

SEMINARIAN GERMAN RODRIGUEZ
We have been very blessed to have German with us at St. Patrick’s.
He had a strong desire to learn as much as possible about what
goes on in a busy parish like ours. While he was here he helped
by assisting at Masses & funerals, attending ministry meetings,
including speaking at the Hispanic Youth Group. He also assisted
our hard working Outreach volunteers unloading trucks, packing
and distributing food. St. Patrick’s Church thanks you German and
wishes you God’s blessings as you continue on your journey to
becoming a priest. We will miss you.
SAYS GOOD-BYE TO ST. PATRICK’S
Thank you from St. Patrick’s Church
Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Weekend of August 27/28, 2011 In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus brings up the topic
of the cross to his followers. They would not realize the cross
was part of God’s plan and was to be their legacy until after
the Resurrection. Today’s followers of Christ recognize they
are stewards of his entire legacy, including his cross; that
through their mutual sacrifices God’s glory is revealed. They
don’t live their life in Christ only when it is convenient for
them. They make a decision to take up their cross and carry
it, no matter what the cost. What crosses do we bear in order
to reveal God’s glory?
Mas
todo esto cambió con Jesús. Con el pasar del tiempo, los cre-
yentes comenzaron a venerar y a honrar la Cruz. La pintaron,
esculpieron, y tallaron imágenes de la misma. Muchos perdie-
ron su vida por asociarse con ella. Hoy nuestra reverencia y
relación con la cruz poco recuerda el desprecio al que origi-
nalmente estuvo asociada. Con el curso de los años, es nuestra
percepción de la Cruz la que determina cómo seguimos a
Jesús. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

The Sisters of Mercy have been at St. Patrick’s for many years. After working with them during the 90’s I became very fond of their Foundress Catherine McAuley. I then began my formation to become a Mercy Associate with the Mercy Sisters of the Americas. I have been an Associate for ten years now and have decided to try and form a prayer group with the focus being the charisms (or gifts) of their foundress. Everyone is welcome.
Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy,
used her inheritance in service of the needs of her time. Today, Sisters of Mercy and Associates of Mercy use
their resources to respond to issues of global poverty demonstrated in the massive displacement of persons
worldwide...This vision keeps alive the founding spirit of Catherine among peoples of the world most in need
of God’s compassion and mercy.
I vision the group meeting once or twice a month praying with Catherine and finding out how we can live our lives in the service of others using resources such as her letters, biographies, essays, etc. written by people around the world who were inspired by her gift of Mercy to all, especially the poor. I am also open to suggestions you may have to make this group a possibility. If you would like more info or are definitely interested, please call or email me.
Blessings to all, Joan Lauriente/jhlaurie@pacbell.net
Volunteer to be an
RCIA Sponsor!
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a
liturgical rite of the Roman Catholic Church. The Rite
calls for a process that offers individuals who may wish
To enter into the Catholic Church an opportunity to
examine the faith in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
This process is also available to those who have been
baptized Catholic and wish to completetheir Catholic
Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist.
RCIA is not a course or class in Catholicism. Rather, it
is a gradual, guided process of formation and conversion
leading participants towards initiation into the Catholic
Church.
Being a sponsor is like being a trusted friend. You share
what you can about your own faith journey.
Sponsors are supported by the RCIA Team.
Through RCIA we are building people of faith, just as
the apostles did!

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
What will I experience at Eucharistic Adoration? Our experience of God’s presence can never be
adequately expressed in words. Jesus is light shining
into our darkness, healing our sorrows and our fears.
He is the bread that satisfies our spiritual hunger, and the brother
who reaches out to rescue us. No matter where we have wandered,
Jesus is always there to welcome us home. During his life on
earth, he laughed and cried. He died and journeyed to Hell. He
resurrected and prepared a place for us in Heaven. Christ remains
with us in everything, His spirit, His body, and His blood. During
our time in the chapel, we can surrender to His love, moment by
moment, and get to know Him better.
Our parish has Eucharistic Adoration in the Chapel every
Friday from 12:30—5:30pm
