(January 12, 13, 14 and 15) Next Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, the priests of the archdiocese will be meeting for a special convocation. Such convocations are rare opportunities for the priests to address issues that are critical to our shared ministry and well-being, so we ask for your prayers that these days may be fruitful. Likewise we ask for your understanding, because the liturgical schedule here at Saint Matthew’s will be reduced here on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (January 12, 13, 14 and 15). We are grateful to one of the retired priests who will celebrate Mass here daily. On these four days, there will be no Confessions, Exposition of Blessed Sacrament or Benediction. The Church and chapel will both be closed at 4pm. The schedule of liturgical events for the week is as follows:

A Prayer for Priests
by St. Therese of Lisieux.
O Jesus, eternal Priest, keep your priests within the shelter of Your Sa-
cred Heart, where none may touch them.
Keep unstained their anointed hands, which daily touch Your Sacred Body.
Keep unsullied their lips, daily purpled with your Precious Blood.
Keep pure and unearthly their hearts, sealed with the sublime mark of the priesthood.
Let Your holy love surround them and shield them from the world's contagion.
Bless their labors with abundant fruit and may the souls to whom they minister
be their joy and consolation here and in heaven their beautiful and
everlasting crown. Amen.

Jubilee Year of Mercy
Feast of the Baptism of the Lord
Fittingly, this Jubilee Year of Mercy is also the Lectionary’s Year of Luke, for Luke’s Gospel highlights God’s mercy in finding the lost, healing the sick, restoring the broken, comforting the sorrowful, forgiving the sinner through Jesus’ ministry. But before doing, Luke’s Jesus is always praying. As practical moderns programmed to measure worth by productivity, we instinctively appreciate the Jubilee’s call to embrace the practical challenges of our baptism.
But today Luke focuses not on Jesus being baptized, but on Jesus praying after baptism. So must we pray to become the disciples we are called to be, that the Spirit empower us to do what disciples are called to do. Imitating Jesus’ openness to the Spirit will enable us to cooperate with the grace that transforms us into “beloved sons [and daughters] . . . in whom the Father is well pleased,” living out, in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the extraordinary potential of our baptism. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. The Baptism of the Lord
Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord. This officially brings to an end the season of Christ-mas. You might say this is a second Epiphany. It is important to us as Catho-lics and Christians be-cause it represents a sec-ond creation involving the entire Trinity.
In fact in the Eastern Church this feast is called Theophany because God appears in three per-sons. Jesus the Son is baptized; the Holy Spirit descends upon Him; and God declares “You are my beloved Son; with You I am well pleased.”
We recall our own Baptism on this day, be-cause Christ’s Baptism represents in many ways what occurred at our Baptism. At Christ’s Bap-tism the Holy Spirit de-scended upon Him. At
our Baptism the Trinity occupied our soul; Christ was declared the “Beloved Son”; at our Baptism we became a child of God. At Jesus’ Baptism the heavens were opened, and at our Baptism heaven was opened to us.
On this Holy Day we need to reflect upon our own Baptismal calls — calls to live and love on this earth, a command to seek holiness, to actively be disciples of Christ, calls which can be achieved in part by em-bracing stewardship as a way of life. The Cate-chism of the Catholic Church (#1213) states: “Holy Baptism is the ba-sis of the whole Christian life, the door which gives access to the other sac-raments. We are incor-porated into the Church and made sharers in her mission.” Reprinted with permission from the 2015 Steward-
ship Consultants, Inc.
Oración por los sacerdotes (Santa Teresita de Lisieux)
Oh Jesús, que has instituido el sacerdocio Para continuar en la tierra la obra divina
de salvar almas;
Amen
