July/Aug Committee Every Catholic Woman
is privileged to be a
member of the Altar
Society and of the Na-
tional Council of Cath-
olic Women.
Dear Friends in Christ, I have learned a great deal about my new home Diocese
in the past few months. One of the most impressive things is your generous mission tradition. This commitment to the evangeliza-tion of the world and service to the poor is the sign of a healthy, vibrant Local Church.
Recently, I had the opportunity to meet two of our mis-
sion partners: Bishop Emmanuel Kerketta of India and Father Dandi Bermejo from the Philippines. While working in very dif-ferent circumstances – Bishop Kerketta with indigenous people in the tribal lands and Father Bermejo with sugarcane workers on the island of Negros Occidental – the two are doing very similar work.
With assistance from our Diocesan Mission Collection,
both are attempting to address the immediate needs of people who have been ignored and marginalized. They are providing health care and education. Through this work, they are building faith communities in which people come to care for each other and eventually extend that care beyond themselves.
This is the way the Gospel works in mission. Whether we
are feeding undernourished children in Mexico, digging a well in Nigeria, or serving people living with HIV-AIDS in Peru, we are bearing God’s love for these people. Their experience of being loved draws them into community to learn, to worship, to pray and to become witnesses to this love themselves.
In the Gospel of Mark, in Jesus’ last words before His
Ascension, He tells His apostles, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.” This is our mandate for mission. This is the reason we have a Diocesan Mission Collection next weekend. Our support of works of charity builds credibility in our profession of faith.
Through our mission partnerships, we are going out and
proclaiming the Joy of the Gospel to a world so desperately in need of it. Grateful for your support,
I am Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend W. Shawn McKnight, S.T.D.
