FEBRUARY 11, 6TH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
Catholics celebrate the sacrament of Reconciliation because we recognise that sometimes we fail to do as we ought and because we believe in God’s mercy and forgiveness. Action: Share your faith in God’s mercy with others and let them know that it is available for them also.
FR. JACK’S CHUCKLE
A man was lost in a desert. Later, when describing
his ordeal to his friends, he told how, in sheer
despair, he had knelt down and cried out to God to
help him. “And did God answer your prayer?” he
was asked. “Oh, no! Before He could, an explorer
appeared and showed me the way.”
Ash Wednesday: marks the beginning of six and a half weeks of repentance, fasting and abstinence in preparation for the most important Christian festival of Easter. Ashes are something that is left when something is burned. For Christians, ashes are a symbol of being sorry for things they have done wrong and want to get rid of forever. It is also a reminder to them that we all come from ashes and to ashes we all will return. For Christians, the marking on the forehead with ash marks the commitment to Jesus Christ and God. They want to show God that they are sorry for the wrong things they had done in the past year. Using ashes to mark the cross on the believer's forehead symbolizes that through Christ's death and resurrection, all Christians can be free from sin. The actual moment when the forehead is marked initiates the beginning of lent for each individual person. Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting and abstinence.
