Spotlight on Organisations
This document highlights some o the key organisations that ocus
on microinance in the Latin American context. Together these
organisations cover a wide range o themes, such as institutional
innovation, rural microinance and microinance technology, and
implement a variety o initiatives, rom research and unding,
to policy advocacy. The organisations include those based in,
and ocused entirely on Latin America, as well as international
organisations that have a signiicant ocus on the region.

This international non-prot organisation - working all over the world, including in Latin America - aims to provide MFIs
in Latin America and beyond with the necessary tools to enhance their business and thereby increase access to nancial
services or the rural poor. The micronance services they oer include management services, investment, innovation
and governance support. Their website includes inormation on their work in the Latin America region, and thelist o their
local partners might be particularly useul or readers seeking access to Latin American MFIs.

CGAP is an independent policy and research organisation based at the World Bank. Through research, outreach and
advocacy, it aims to support poor peoples access to nance. Publications are on diverse topics related to micronance,
aiming to promote standards, innovate and oer advice, and share interesting case studies. Though ocused internationally,
CGAP has conducted research and carried out other activities ocusing on Latin American countries. Their organisational
blog also oten ocuses on Latin America, oering interesting eatures on regional trends and specic countries. Finally,
CGAP runs the Micronance Gateway, a comprehensive online source o publications, news, training and employment
inormation related to micronance.

EFL is an independent, private organisation whose objective is to link nancial institutions with high-potential
entrepreneurs, mostly rom SMEs in developing countries that are not always easy to identiy. EFL provides tools,
technical assistance and a knowledge centre or capacity building on how to better score credit and avoid risk.
Analysed in theELLA Micronance Technology Brie, credit scoring methods have proven to be eective and the ones
based upon psychometric principles are starting to become commonly used due to their statistically-proven impact on
reducing risk. Though working worldwide, EFL has a signicant ocus in Latin America through its ofces in Lima, Peru
and Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Areas o Expertise: Financial access or the poor
Key Activities: Impact evaluations, research, randomised evaluations
Innovations or Poverty Action (IPA) is one o the key organisations promoting randomised evaluations in development.
IPAs Global Financial Inclusion initiative applies their research methodologies to questions related to how poor people
could and do make use o nancial services. IPA manages projects in the Latin America region in Bolivia, Chile, Dominican
Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico and Peru. Research ndings are available on the publications page, and they also
conduct outreach events to disseminate their work.

Over the past twenty years, the IDB has conducted a signicant amount o work related to micronance in Latin America.
The IDB provides unding or countries to strengthen micronance regulations and expand access. They also conduct
research about a variety o micronance topics, and in act are probably one o the largest sources o publications about
micronance in Latin America. They publish academic publications along with case studies about the micronance
programmes they are unding, like the Social Entrepreneurship Program mentioned in theELLA Guide to Micronance,
which supports programmes related to rural nance and access to basic services.

MIF, a member o the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), ocuses on supporting private sector development, and
includes a signicant amount o work on micronance and access to nance more generally. They conduct and publish
a variety o research, rom theoretical documents to empirical evidence and reports on the Latin American micronance
market, and projects related to improving nancial inclusion. TheirMicAmericas knowledge platorm, published in English
and Spanish, houses additional research and publications. Though in Spanish, their YouTube channel includes videos
about micronance in Latin America.

Based in New York City,Pro Mujer(meaning Pro Woman) is an innovative micronance organisation dedicated to providing
access to nance or women in Latin America, working primarily in Argentina, Bolivia, Mexico, Nicaragua and Peru. The
Pro Mujerapproach - micronance plus - combines providing micronance to poor women with other services such as
health services, training and basic nancial education. Their products include small, general and seasonal business loans,
education and housing loans, savings accounts and lie insurance. Pro Mujerhas a YouTube channel and many English
publications documenting their approach and experiences.
Microfnance Inormation Exchange (MIX) Market

This non-prot organisation is a source o up-to-date inormation about micronance institutions, unders and other key
micronance actors, as well as indicators on sector perormance. MIX aims to be the rst source o objective, relevant and
quality micronance perormance data and analysis. Not only are publications and regional analysis made continuously,
but readers can create their own reports by selecting relevant indicators or ocusing on specic countries or regions;
they also accumulate and publish a wealth o inormation about Latin America. Though users need a premium account
to access the most in-depth data, many o their larger reports and publications are available to any user.

The RFLC website acts as a database o diverse publications about rural micronance. These publications are about
organisations that oer training, events, and theoretical literature about rural micronance worldwide including case

advice, service provision and policymaking. Although RFLC is not ocused only on Latin America, nor does it have a specic
regional department, it is an extremely useul organisation, as readers can use the websitesadvanced search eature to
nd publications and training materials specic to the Latin America region.

Womens World Banking is a micronance network ocused entirely on building womens access to nance and promoting
their economic empowerment. It works with MFIs o all around the world, and has a particularly strong presence in Latin
America, working with important MFIs in Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Paraguay and Peru.
WWB has a strong ocus on knowledge sharing, doing research on product and services design and good practice, and
engaging in policy advocacy. Their publications page includes a wealth o inormation about their work, ndings and
training materials ocused specically on the Latin America region.
