Question
I
Read the
following
text
and complete
the
given task.
(Adapted
from Young
Oxford
Encyclopedia)
Titan,
Saturn s
largest
and most exotic
moon,
has
planetary
scientists so
excited as it
possesses
certain
Earthlike
features.
Over the
past
few
years,
a
pair
of
probes
-
Cassini,
which has
orbited
Saturn since
2004,
and Huygens, which
plummeted
onto Titan s
surface in 2005
-
have discovered features
that
are
reminiscent
of Earth.
Like
Earth, Titan
has mountains,
volcanoes,
dunes, riverbeds and
rainstorms.
To
cap it
all, scientists announced that
Cassini s
powerful
imaging
radar had
uncovered a
system
of
more
than
75 lakes dotting the
north
polar
region.
However, Titan has
a surface temperature
that
hovers
around
minus 290
degrees
Fahrenheit.
Hence,
allthose
familiar-looking features
are constructed
from decidedly
unfamiliar materials. The mountains
are
made
primarily
of rock-hard water
ice;
the dunes
are
ice
granules
coated with hydrocarbons:
volcanoes
probably
belch
methane
and ammonia,
and the lakes are
filled
with methane.
Scientists
require
more time to study
Titan
before they can make sense
of
the satellite that
is
so tantalisingly Earthlike.

Question
2
Read
the
following
text and complete
the
given
task.
Probably the most numerous organisms, and the first life-forms to evolve
on
earth,
are
the organisms
of
the moneran
kingdom. All monerans
are
bacteria.
There are three main
types: cyanobacteria,
true bacteria and archaeobacteria.
Monerans are
also called
prokaryotes
because of their simple
cell
structure.
Monerans
are
among
the most
important
organisms
on earth. Many
monerans
help break
down dead organisms and waste matter. In this
way,
they
recycle
chemicals
and
make
them
available
to the other
organisms.
For
example, true bacteria living in the soil rapidly
turn
dead
organisms
into valuable nutrients,
such
as
nitrogen,
in
the soil.
Bacteria themselves are
a
valuable
food
source for many
other
organisms. Monerans
also
add
and
remove important
gases
to and
from
the
air.
Monerans are
so numerous because different forms
can
withstand
a
wide
range
of
environmental
conditions.
On
the bottom
of the
deepest oceans,
monerans
withstand
intense
pressures.
Others
can survive the
near-boiling
temperatures of
sulfur-filled
pools
on land.
With
their
small size and
simple
cell
structures, monerans
can multiply very
rapidly.
Some true
bacteria can divide
once every 20 minutes.
