Chapter Activities 1. KHET laser game
SPIE Sichuan University Student chapter got the KHET from SPIE at the beginning of this year. We launched a competive KHET laser game on January 19 2013. More than ten student members in our chapter participated in this laser game. All participants enjoyed the game greatly. Finally, three members of them got awards for their outstanding performance in this game. The funny KHET laser game not only strengthened the communication between our members, but also improved our interesting in optics.
2. Leadership communication Some leaders and members in SPIE Sichuan University Student Chapter had
a communication with Da Zhizhang on March 10, who was the expresident of SPIE Sichuan University Student Chapter. Zhang was good at management and had a famous reputation in our college. He is now an excellent engineer in an company. Our chapter’s leaders had a talk with him about how to enhance the leadership ability and how to improve our chapter’s activities. Zhang shared his story with us and gave our chapter some significant sugestions.
3. International symposium on development and application of high power laser technology
Four members of SPIE Sichuan University Student Chapter participated in the International symposium on development and application of high power laser technology at the Lvzhou Hotel in Chengdu China on April 15 2013. This symposium was supported by SPIE. Some top scientists from China, US, UK and some other countries gave brilliant lectures to all participants. It was a great chance for our members to learn from the top scientist and expand the influence of our chapter.
4. Visiting lectures on display technology Three lectures given by three top scientists on display field were supported
by SPIE Sichuan University Student Chapter on April 20. Almost all member in our chapter attended this academic activity. Thie first lecture was given by Dr. Martin Schadt from Swiss. He is the fellow of Academy of Europe and SID. Dr. Martin won the U.S. National Academy of Engineering Charles Stark Draper Prize in 2012 , which is known as the Nobel Prize in engineering field. Dr Martin gave some very useful sugestions about how to do research to us. The second lecture was given by Professor SinDoo Lee from Seoul National University, who is a wellknown international expert in the display field. He is the Chairman of the 2008 International Liquid Crystal Conference , the President of the American West photoelectron Assembly ( organized by SPIE) and the vice chairman of Korea Society for Information Display. He introduced the development on display
field. Some research forfronts are very interesting. The last lecture was given by Professor ShinTson Wu from University of Central Florida. He is a renowned expert in the field of display. He gave a lecture named My America Dream to us. He shared his story with us and had a interaction with audience. Their lectures and stories inspired us and motivated our curiosity on optics greatly.
5. Invitation lecture on simulation software Dr. Wei Wu from Infotek Information Science and Technology Co. in
Shanghai gave a lecture to our members on May 5. He introduced the FRED to us. FRED is a simulation software on optical engineering. He showed the operation process of FRED to us. Essential Macleod and some other softwares were also introduced in the lecture. Our members got a great deal useful information about these sofewares. It is very helpful for our member’s researching work in the future.
6. Asia Student Photonics Conference 2013 Our SPIE Sichuan University Student Chapter cooperated with other 6 SPIE
chapters and 4 OSA chapters, from Japan, Singapore, India, Malaysia, Taiwan, and China, to organize the Asia Student Photonics Conference 2013 during 2224 July, 2013 in Osaka, Japan.
This collaborative student conference was organized by SPIE/OSA Osaka Unversity Student Chapter and sponsored by SPIE and JSPS and other corporations. Six visiting lecturers have been given on this conference. Four professors came from Osaka university, Pennsylvania State University and Rice university. They introduced their research field respectively. Experience on how to do research and how to write excellent paper are also shown by professors. Which of them are very helpful for young researchers. Dr. Rinto Nakahara, who is the president of Nanophoton corporation in Japan, shared his business story. He encouraged students to think what we really want and who we really want to be. Participants had a strong discussion about that. Dr. Dirk Fabian from SPIE gave a lecture about Professional network making through SPIE. He encouraged young researchers to bulid their network by SPIE conference like this. It is very helpful for all students. All participant gave a poster or oral presentation during the conference.
We would like to appreciate all the excellent presentations during this 3day student conference. We enjoyed this student conference and had a nice excursion after the end of the conference in Osaka.
7. SPIE Optics&Photonics 2013 SPIE Optics&Photonics is the largest interdisciplinary technical conference
in North America. Bing Zeng, President of SPIE Sichuan Univerisy Student Chapter, submitted a paper named “Enhancement effect of terahertz wave in split ring resonators” to the conference. He planed to attend the conference. But he did not get the visa in time and lost the great opportunity finally. He finally asked his friend Ming Zhao, who is a member of SPIE Singapore Student Chapter, to have a poster presentation for him during the conference. The figure below is from the official website of SPIE.
Planned Activities in the future 1. Holding a laser game competition. 2. Organizing the academic seminar regularly. 3. Inviting professors in the filed of optics and photonics to deliver talks. 4. Giving lectures to underclassman. 5. Participating the optics conferences. 6. Organizing activities in primary school. 7. Visiting famous research centers. 8. Visiting companies in the field of optics and photonics. 9. Communicating and exchanging ideas with OSA Students Chapters.
