What are phonics rules?

• Phonics rules provide keys to sounding out new words.

• When two of the same consonants appear side by side in a word, only one is heard.

Example: staccato (stƏ-ˋkä-tō)

Exception: suggest (sƏg- ˋjest)

Note: Many rules have exceptions.

What if I can’t sound it out?

• If the word is not a high frequency word like “suddenly” or a sight word like “have,” you need to rely on other strategies.

Strategy – Hand/Mind Connection

• You may need to use repeated writing or typing of the word.

Strategy – Speak

• Spell the word, letter by letter, by saying them out loud.
