The history of Black FridayBlack Friday marks the
unofficial start of the holi-day shopping season.Come Black Friday, shop-pers strive to get the low-est prices on gifts for theirloved ones.Much of the focus of
Black Friday is on findingthe best deals, but it canbe interesting to take abreath and learn how thisphenomenon developedand how it has evolvedover the years."Black Friday"The term "black
Friday" was originallyassociated with goldprices and manipulation
on the part of speculatorsJay Gould and JamesFisk. This scandaloccurred in September1869. Commodity pricesplummeted 50 percent asa result, and the term"black Friday" was coinedto refer to that drop. The phrase "black
Friday" also becamefamous for all the wrongreasons in 1966.Philadelphia police used itto refer to the Friday traf-fic jams and crowding indowntown stores fromtourists and shoppers whoflooded into the city inadvance of the Army-Navy
football game held theSaturday afterThanksgiving each year.Bigger crowds and rowdi-ness contributed to longhours and stressful shiftsfor local police.Black Friday reinvent-
edThe retail industry
started using the term"Black Friday" in the late1980s. Spin doctorsturned previously nega-tive connotations into pos-itive ones by associatingthe phrase with storesturning a profit and mov-ing accounting ledgers

from "red to black"thanks to big year-endsales. Retailers and con-sumers rallied aroundlow-cost "doorbusters" andother discounted prices.Interestingly enough,
according to the NationalRetail Federation, BlackFriday really hasn't beenthe most lucrative day forretailers over the years. Infact, greater profits andlarger crowds are often
seen on the last Saturdaypreceeding Christmas.Shopping weekend
evolvesWhile Black Friday may
have been the catalyst, inrecent years shoppers havemade the entire weekendof Black Friday a lucrativeone for retailers. Manystores now open onThanksgiving and extendsales through the entireweekend. Small Business
Saturday and Sunday pro-mote patronizing mom-and-pop stores. CyberMonday emerged whenonline shopping became apopular way to grab deals, and it marks the close ofthe opening weekend of theholiday shopping season. In 2017, Black Fridayweekend attracted 174 mil-lion shoppers who spent anaverage of $335.47, accord-ing to the NRF.

Dos and don'ts ofholiday safety
It's the most wonderfultime of the year, as long asholiday happenings go asplanned. Celebrants canensure that this joyous timeof year is not marred byinjury, theft or accidents byalways keeping safety inmind.
DO turn off Christmaslights before going to bed orleaving home. Lights left oncan overheat and cause fires.Electrical distribution orlighting equipment wasinvolved in two of every fivehome Christmas tree firesbetween 2011 and 2015,according to the NationalFire Prevention Association.
DON'T locate a Christmastree too close to a heatingsource, fireplace or lit candles,as trees can dry out andignite.
DO extinguish candlesbefore retiring for the night.
DON'T gift without doingresearch into whether or nottoys are age-appropriate. Payattention to toy recalls aswell. The Consumer ProductSafety Commission provideslists of recalled items.
DO roast rather than frythe holiday turkey. Burns, explosions and carbonmonoxide poisoning are someof the dangers associatedwith turkey fryers. TheCPSC, which discourages theuse of fryers, says there havebeen 168 turkey-fryer relatedincidents since 2002.
DON'T keep purchases inview of potential thieves.
Resist putting presents underthe tree until the night beforeChristmas. Hide large prod-uct boxes so they're not visi-ble in the trash or recyclingpickups, where thieves mightlook to see what's inside thehouse.
DO wait until after yourholiday excursion to take tosocial media about it.Otherwise, you're simplyadvertising that you are nothome and risking a break-in.
DON'T drive distracted orunder the influence. This is abusy time of year when morepeople are out and about, sokeep your eyes on the road atall times.
DO keep poisonous plantsout of reach of pets and chil-dren. These can includeJerusalem cherry, mistletoeberries and holly berries.
DON'T locate breakableornaments close to the bot-tom of the tree in reach ofyoung children. Glass canshatter and cause seriousinjuries.
DO tie the Christmas treeto the car securely after pur-chasing it to avoid lift-offwhile taking it home from thelot. At home, secure the treeto the ceiling or a wall with apiece of invisible fishing linefor extra security against tipovers.
DON'T underestimate thethings that can and will gowrong when hosting for theholidays. Take a deep breath, assess the situation and staycalm through any hiccups.

Families big and smalltypically celebrate the holi-day season together. Forsome, celebrating the holi-days with family requirestraveling, while others stayput and welcome family andfriends into their homes. At some point during the
holiday season, celebrantswho host family and friendswill no doubt prepare ahomecooked meal for theirloved ones. Cooking for acrowd can seem like adaunting task, especially forfirst-time hosts. However, there are various ways forhosts to simplify cooking fora crowd this holiday season.1. Prepare a familiar
dish.Hosts may agonize over
their holiday menus, andsome may feel compelled toprepare a family specialtyor the same dishes theirparents or grandparentsprepared for holiday din-ners when they were chil-dren. But holiday hosts canmake things easy on them-
selves by choosing dishesthey've made in the past, regardless of their place infamily history. Chances arethe ingredients for hosts'own specialties are alreadyin the pantry, saving apotentially time-consumingtrip to the grocery store. And thanks to the familiar-ity factor, hosts' own special-ties likely won't require asmuch time to prepare.2. Share some cooking
duties.Another way to simplify
cooking for a crowd is toinvite guests to bring along
4 tips to simplify cooking for a crowd thisholiday season
a side dish or dessert.Guests who live nearby canmake something in advanceof the big meal, while hostscan hand over theirkitchens to overnight guestswho express a willingnessto contribute their ownhomecooked dish to theparty. Sharing the cookingduties gives hosts moretime to connect with friendsand family and serves as agreat way to plan the menuin advance.3. Only make what
guests are likely to eat.Hosts also should not
feel pressured to cook morefood than is necessary.Holiday meals have a ten-dency to be lavish, but hostsdon't have to spend all dayin the kitchen preparingfood that will likely end upas leftovers or trash. Get afinal headcount in the daysbefore everyone comes overand adjust your recipesaccordingly.4. Start early. If the big is on
Christmas Day, that doesnot mean hosts have to
start cooking while every-one unwraps their presents.Hosts who are uncertainabout what to cook can lookfor meals that can be pre-pared in advance so comethe big day all they need todo is turn on the oven andlet meals cook while thefamily spends time togeth-er.Hosts can employ vari-
ous strategies to simplifythe process of cooking for acrowd this holiday season.

How to time holiday shopping rightThe holiday season
begins at the end ofNovember and stretchesinto the first week ofJanuary. But this five-week stretch may not nec-essarily be the best timefor everyone to shop.Harvard Business
Review says that the retailindustry has been turnedon its head in recent years, and shoppers and retailersmay want to rethink theirapproaches to the holidayshopping season.Consumers are no longerinterested in retailers dic-tating their shoppingschedules, and some peo-ple have grown accus-tomed to buying productswhen they want them -especially when price is ofno concern.Even budget-conscious
shoppers have changedtheir habits, says the shop-ping advisor RetailNext. Many holiday shoppers aredelaying their shoppinguntil January to takeadvantage of post-seasonsales.Holiday shopping need
not wait until after the hol-iday season, either. A 2017RetailMeNot survey foundthat 45 percent of U.S. con-sumers said they plannedto start shopping beforeNovember 1. One-quarter
of the surveyrespondentssaid theyplanned tostart shoppingb e f o r eOctober, and12 percentstarted shop-ping for theholidays in thesummer. So when
should con-sumers do their holidayshopping? It all dependson what fits a person'sindividual needs.· Shop sales, not sched-
ules. If budget is a big con-cern, shoppers should grabitems that are on salewhenever they are avail-able. That can mean shop-ping at any time of theyear. People can try mak-ing a master shopping listearly in the year and sav-ing it on their mobilephones. While shoppingthroughout the year, itemsfrom the list can be pur-chased and stored until theholidays.· Shop your strengths.
Those who get a thrill fromtackling their entire shop-ping list in one haul canstill do that. Shopping inthis manner can help shop-pers focus on the task athand and reduce the likeli-hood of wasting time. Butkeep in mind that, accord-ing to a survey conducted
by Business Wire, 65 per-cent of holiday shoppersscramble to complete theirpurchases in the last twoweeks before Christmas, soshoppers who delay maybe stuck in long lines atthe mall.· Embrace in-store pick-
up. Many retailers aremerging their online andbrick-and-mortar opera-tions. Shoppers have theconvenience of price-com-parison and online shop-ping, with the physicalenjoyment of going out tothe store to complete theirpurchases. In-store pickupoften enables shoppers toavoid hefty shipping fees,as in-store pickup is free.Plus, scoping out itemsonline - and ensuringthey're in stock - saves thehassle of making a trip invain.Shoppers can look
beyond the conventionalholiday season to get thebest prices and deals thatfit their shopping needs.
