Member update
Congratulations to Andy & Laura on their
marriage, a lot warmer than Blackpool ! Best Wishes to you both X
A group of disabled and non-disabled
primary school children have made an
upbeat yet hard-hitting DVD,
exploring the different ways in which
we communicate with each
other and the importance of finding
ways to involve and Listen to ALL
children.
An accompanying booklet supports the
DVD, giving professionals more detail
on the issues raised and practical
ways of involving and listening, to both
disabled and non-disabled children.
The Children have devised 6 essential
standards for service providers to
follow in order for them to deliver a
fully inclusive service for all.

1Voice welcomes our new Treasurer Julie Bello A word from Julie… Hello to all, I was born and raised in Essex and have recently moved back to UK after living in USA. I have two adult children, one in US military and one here with me. Natasha is 21 and an AAC user for past 20 years. I am fascinated by AAC and technology and have pursued all manner of technology to further Natasha's progress. In my spare time I have volunteered for various charitable groups over the years, usually as Treasurer, since I like numbers! I am very pleased to offer my time and skills to 1Voice as your new treasurer. We are in challenging but exciting times as 1Voice branches out to local communities.
If you would like to share your news with 1Voice members, either in the
newsletter or on the website please contact Gaynor. gaynordale@1voice.info
Whizz-kidz are calling on the government to Fast Forward
reform of NHS wheelchair provision for disabled children
and young people. This will ensure that all disabled
children in the UK can access the right mobility equipment
and on-going support that they need without undue delay.
The government has made a commitment to reform NHS
wheelchair services on many occasions. Whizz-kidz would like
to urge the new government to Fast Forward improvements to
NHS wheelchair provision for disabled children.
This Government has pledged that if we can raise 100,000
signatures on one petition this would bring forward a debate in
parliament about the need for Wheelchair Reform. So please
sign this petition, it will take two minutes but could change the
lives of disabled children all over the UK.
You will find the petition at either of the links below: http://www.whizz-kidz.org.uk/fastforward/fastforward-petition/ http://tinyurl.com/5wznuvt

Nadia and Katie Clarke were invited to take part in the Northern Rally for Workers demonstration against the budget cuts on 12th Feb 2011. Together with their local Member of Parliament Linda Riordan they led the march through the streets of Halifax together with a marching band. Both gave passionate speeches about the impact that budget cuts will on disabled children and young people and the most vulnerable families across the north of England. There were also speeches from the MP, several unionists and a student. Nadia's 5 minute speech echoed around the outdoor venue from her dynavox and had people in tears!!!! The feedback was tremendous and the impact of a young disabled person speaking around fairness and equality had a massive impact.
WELL DONE TO NADIA & KATIE

O ur theme of ‘Dreams’ was embraced by everyone who had a wonderful time
making dream catchers, and talking about their aspirations. The children and
young people made a fantastic Dreams DVD (see our website for a preview). All in all

National Year of Communication
Q: What is Hello? A: Hello is the 2011 national year of communication - a campaign to increase understanding of how important it is for children and young people to develop good communication skills. Speech, language and communication underpin everything we do. Communication is a skill that we learn and develop and is something we can all improve. For some children, their daily struggle to communicate means they are shut out of everyday life. Hello, run by over 35 leading voluntary and community organisations, aims to make communication for all children and young people a priority in homes and schools across the UK so that they can live life to the full. The campaign is backed by the Department for Education and BT. Hello activity will stretch across public, voluntary and commercial sectors with direct involvement from frontline staff across all areas of the campaign.
Visit www.hello.org.uk to get involved and sign up for regular updates.
1Voice has been
asked to assist in
the creation of a
booklet for AAC
users, their families
How can 1Voice members get involved?
The Campaign runs around monthly themes whereby they will get their most publicity and members of the
Communication Trust will be available to assist, advise and in some cases take part. With this in mind a number of our
branches are holding their activities themed around the campaign and we ask you to come up with ways in which AAC users can be involved. We have the following ideas:
Over February and March, Hello will be focusing on its early
years theme Early chatter matters: from bump to birth and beyond.
hello@thecommunicationtrust.org.uk.
Useful statements and facts from the campaign Speech, language and communication underpins everything we do e.g. making our
needs known and expressing our likes and dislikes. In the UK today over 1 million children and young people have some form of speech, language and communication needs. 10% of all children have long term or persistent speech, language and communication needs.
Communication is an interaction between two people in which something is exchanged. Doesn't have to be words. Don't take it for granted

The Campaign For A Fair Society, launched February 8th 2011 If you are worried about coalition government cuts to services for disabled people, Pippa Murray, 1Voice member invites you to join The Campaign For A Fair Society. In the government’s comprehensive spending review, announced on October 20 last year, Chancellor George Osborne insisted that those with the "broadest shoulders should bear the greatest burden." In fact, the government is implementing cuts that will impact on some of the most vulnerable people in society, including people with learning disabilities and disabled children. The campaign is not just about protest, but also about making a positive contribution. It proposes seven principles to guide decisions about policy and funding, and seeks to engage policy makers in dialogue. To join The Campaign For A Fair Society, and find out more about the principles it promotes, visit www.campaignforafairsociety.com
Tamsin and Katie - our 2 co-founders - are planning their retirement from their present
roles at 1Voice. This is in line with the framework of the charity Strategic Business Plan, which aims to help 1Voice transition from a small charity to the fully sustainable national
organisation it is now becoming. It is important that Katie and Tamsin begin to step back and let other focused and positive people take over at the helm! As 1Voice grows the need
for new trustees and fresh blood and new ideas is much appreciated and needed.
To make sure that things go as smoothly as possible, they are going to stagger their
leaving. They are looking for people to express an interest and find out more about joining the Management Board. The positions of Secretary and Chair are calling out for
motivated and passionate people to further the vision and work of 1Voice.
This could be you!
1Voice will be advertising for these posts and taking expressions of interest and
applications from members. The deadline for expressions of interest is 18th April and there will be an application process.
The successful applicants would have our full support and Katie and Tamsin would welcome a period of role shadowing and could provide a staged handover.
The roles of Chair and Secretary are three year commitment which could be extended.
If you are interested in supporting 1Voice through an exciting time ahead of new branches
and development please do get in touch with Katie on 01422 341578 or
email katie@1voice.info or tamsin@1voice.info
